Great picture Glenda. We have never had purple martins at our homes, but I would say it definitly is one. My bird book says their voice is a "liguid, gurgling warble".

After some research, I think it is a female. She is still alone and sings beautifully in early morning. I am so hoping others join her. I can walk right up within 10 feet or so of the house without her flying off.

I found a wonderful bird site that allows you to hear the sounds of various birds. It helped me identify her.

That Cornell Uiversity bird site is wonderful. We're using it every day. At my bird feeder we regularly have blue grossbeak, indigo bunting, red grossbeak, red-bellied woodpecker, turtle doves, mourning doves, yellow and purple finches, cardinals, jays, red-winged blackbirds, and brown-headed cowbirds to name a few. Also have Kildeer, Meadow Larks, Robins who find their own lunch.

I now have at least three Martins and am thrilled. They are battling with a pair of starlings who I think have nests on one side and the martins on the other. Have you ever seen this done before?

pomona, the red and blue grosbeaks are new to me. Could the red be a rose breasted grosbeak? The blue is in my bird book, but not the red.
