Fresh peaches sound sooo good. Wish they were easier to grow.
Iris are pretty easy to plant since they're shallow. Maybe just a few Glenda. : ) Mine are totally neglected and never watered and they do just fine. If you're truly lazy, you could try just spraying an area with Round-Up, laying the iris on top and then barely cover them with mulch. I bet they'd never notice. lol
We got about an inch altogether from rain last night and this morning and it's sprinkling right now. Last weekend we got 1.4 inches but I had plants that were starting to wilt by Wednesday, only four days later, so I guess that shows how dry it was. The trees were thirsty.
We had a little storm without the rain yesterday afternoon with LOTS of wind and some thunder. My neighbor has half of a tree down.
I have some melons that are just about ready to pick. They're mystery melons so I'm guessing on when to pick them. They could be Juan Canary and I've been checking the blossom end to see if it's getting soft. It's taking forever. We've only harvested two watermelons this year so far and I have some others that are almost softball size and some smaller ones not as big as a golf ball. I'm wondering if those will have time to finish. Hope at least the softball size ones will. Does anyone know?

AMEN!!!! The rain is coming down as I type and oh what a glorious sound!!! We are cattle farmers and have been praying hard for some. We had a small pond for our cattle dry up this summer and have been setting out hay already. Our preacher told us a story today about a family in Franklin County (this is the co. we live in as well) that had all there hay burnt up in their barn over the weekend by two teenage boys from St. Louis out on a joy ride. This was their feed for the year. So sad! They sure could use the rain. More so than maybe any of us...

As of yesterday morning, we had 2 inches! I haven't checked yet, but we did get more showers during the day. We raise cattle too, so were so grateful to get this on the pastures. We have been feeding hay about a week.

Christie, you convinced me about ordering plants....but I ordered daylilies! Now I will take a look at a small order of irises.

Didn't do much yesterday, except clean the house. Our DD and GD are coming down for a couple of days so had to make sugar cookies and rolls.....requested! Will make the requested pizza today. Any excuse to cook!

I really need to mow part of the yard. The area around the flower beds that gets sprinkled, is really growing. May trust DH today to get that done.

I noticed the tall grass this morning too. Too wet to mow here. It's still looking like rain today as well. Yesterday here in central mo we got 2 inches for the day. And almost 7 tenths on Sat. afternoon into Sun. morning. Hate to say it but though it is a welcome sight for the shallow rooted growers, not enough for the poor trees. My poor friend and neighbor had to bury her dog this morning. She got hit this morning on their morning walk, coincedently by my husband (even worse). She said that the ground is wet only 4 inches deep and then dry as a bone. Weather reports say rain again thurs and fri. I'll take it. I spent two hours yesterday afternoon weeding the garden, etc. in the light rain. I enjoyed not sweating for a change. My kids played in the puddles...

Dairy farmer, huh? I read your profile. I am now on my knees bowing to you, "I'm not worthy!" That's a lot of work!!! I didn't grow up on a farm. I had Iowa grandparents who were crop farmers and married into this farming family. My husband's family used to dairy farm and stopped in the late 60's. Had pigs at one time. But stuck with beef cattle. It's time consuming (not as much as dairy) and so much is dependent on good weather. Beyond late spring for hay. Luckily we had round bails left in the hay barn from last year. No second cuttings for anyone around here!!

We got about a total of little over an inch the past couple of days. Every lil bit surely appreciated. The pastures will surely appreciate it, but didn't too much for pond levels.
I should be out pulling some weeds while it is still cool and damp, but can't get my "get up and go" into gear.
Managed to get three loads of laundry hung yesterday and dry before it started to rain. Some were slightly damp, the last ones hung out, but got them in before they got soaked.

Sunday and Monday we got a combined total of 1.2 tenths inches of rain. Helped cool things down for awhile---greedy and hoping for more.

Still getting some tomatoes but they are very sour it seems to me. Dry weather and well water doesn't make for good tasting tomatoes.

Can't imagine anyone being mean enough to burn someones hay. Although I guess I shouldn't be surprised at anything anymore.

Had a couple of people stop by this afternoon to look at my flowers! What a joke!! I told them to overlook the weeds; I was embarrased as I have let the weeds get ahead of me this hot weather. One of them had been here several times before and she had her aunt from Oklahoma with her. Gave them some melampodium seeds as they had never seen them before. I was on the telephone with my sister from OK. when they came and when DH told me someone wanted to look at the flowers I thought he was pulling my leg--he is a jokester. One is going to bring me back some hollyhock and hyacinth bean seeds. The next cool day I need to do something about cleaning those beds out.

Hope we get more rain especially you that haven't been getting any--maybe your turn next.

Just need to let everyone know that we are not getting any more rain than what was reported by others on this forum. Seems like most afternoons we get a shower and the ground being so dry it is absorbed and by next morning all is dry again. Garden is still producing some vegetables and it is time to start with the fall gardening. Temps have been very hot and humid also. Very uncomfortable outdoors under these conditions.

Sorry ceresone and susy about the rain. I live farther north than you guys. I'm in central mo. 60 miles south west of St. Louis. Our weather is rarely your weather. You guys usually get what those Springfield stations call the Tri state weather. We get Kansas weather. My mom lives in Marshfield and she surprised me this morning by saying it had been hot over the last few days. We had cooler temps.

I felt so sorry for those people. Teenagers don't always get it do they?

I took advantage of the wet ground and weeded most of the mess I had out there. Going to finish up after supper. Today was the first day of school here. YIPPPPPPIEEEE! Nice peaceful day. First day of school is my favorite day of the whole year:)

We have had less than an inch of rain.Still picking and sharing lots of lovely tomatoes.The storms have all missed us but so has most of the rain.I am thankful for what we have gotten tho.Have a few flowers but the quality is sure lacking.Yes,Ned is still on TV.It is hot and sticky here now.I have grapes to pick.They have had a disease the last few years and there haven't been any.The dry weather must slow down the disease.Glad you all got some rain that needed it so badly.Posy Pet

Got another inch today, was so nice and cool, then heated up this afternoon.
Looks like my tomatoes are about gone, ones on vine are looking awful. Oh well, there's always next year.

This is my second attempt at posting this morning--had the post about finished and the electricity clicked off for a little bit and I lost it. Hate when that happens---have to reset microwave clock, etc.

Donna, I have been lazy lately as well. Do the necessary household chores and errands I have to run and that is it. Need to clean the office-sewing/craft-ironing room as it is beginning to look cluttered. I need to go through closets and get rid of alot of stuff since I am such a pack rat!! Looking forward to fall weather as that usually gives me a burst of energy!

Yes, Ned Reynolds is still at KY-3 although I haven't seen him for awhile--guess I don't watch the sportscast. Sunday was Houston Day at the Springfield Cardinals baseball game. My youngest daughter went and they gave out Ned Reynolds BobbleHead Dolls. Over 800 people went to the game from Houston. Almost half of our town!! (Grin)

Anyone read any good books lately? I love to read (the reason my closets need to be cleaned out)---nothing heavy or depressing. At this time in my life I like light comedy, romance, etc. I like historical settings but just love to read most things.

Oh , suzy, wish you liked detective novels/mystery. i've gone thru about every author that i like.also like lavyrle spencer tho. having to go to the library, cause only good used book store is in the next town, and too hot to go.
our grass has greened up sone, but i'm afraid if it reaches 98 tomorrow, it will sap what moisture we got.
still looking for good horse hay for the winter, small bales are hard to find, man i bought from last year brings it in from kansas, and hasnt made the trip yet.

I seldom buy any books but my sister does and passes hers along to me but mostly mine are from the library. I have read some mysteries that I liked--- I like John Grisham, Nicholas Sparks--two authors that come to mind. I look for Maeve Binchy, Jane Feather, Ruth Langan, Carolyn Davidson, Jayne Ann Krentz, Sandra Brown, Dallas Schultze, Penny Jordan and some others because I like their writing style and usually learn a historical fact or two.

Been having some red eyes---going to Cabool to the eye doctor tomorrow. Haven't had them checked in awhile and probably some eye strain as well as allergies play a part and ragweed is high in pollen right now.

Chipped a tooth so left my upper denture at the dentists this afternoon and will pick it up in the morning before going to the eye doctor. Don't like for anyone to see me without my dentures in. Vain!!

Warm today and supposed to be hot again tomorrow. Typical Midwest August weather I guess. Lived here all my life but haven't got used to it.

Hello everyone! Our company left yesterday around noon. Had a great time, but ate too much. I sent every leftover home with them......we can't have sweets and breads in the house....too much temptation.

We finally ended up with 2-1/2 inches of rain. Now, it is hot and humid again. I didn't get my yard mowed so will have to work that in between finishing up the peaches.

Susy, I ordered a small order (9) of clump-size dayliles from Flynn. Sure hope I have the energy to get them into the ground! I wanted to order from Wild (I have in the past) but all the reports sounded so negative, I was afraid to try. Have you ordered from them lately?

Ceresone, sure glad to hear your husband's report was good.

I told our daughter I was thinking about milking these last heifers and she let me know, in no uncertain terms, what she thought about it! We probably will just sell them...I am getting very negative feedback from all quarters.

We toured the farm while they were here and I couldn't believe how the weeds have thrived in this drought. We saw thistles and lots of ragweed and thorn trees, so will do some more mowing this next week.

Garden is about finished except for the two rows of late bush beans and they are beginning to bloom. I just let the pole beans go......too many strings for me to fool with. Tomatoes have slowed down considerably.

Flowers are so so. I had a lot of various rudbeckias self-seed and I love them, I have singles, complete doubles where you can't even see the center, semi-doubles, but none of the green centered ones returned. I did have one verbena Homestead Purple come back. I just love that plant!

The drive bed is such a jamble, I can't wait for a frost so I can get in there with the riding mower and cut it down.

Hang in there everyone; it is August 19.....Fall can't be far behind.

I haven't ordered from Wild's for quite a while. In the past I have ordered several daylilies from them but since they changed hands I had several daylilies that were misnamed. Some of the hardiest daylilies I have are the ones I ordered from Wild's in the late 90's. They have really good prices so hope they will change their ways. (grin) You will be fine on the daylilies as long as they are in the ground 4-6 weeks before the ground freezes. Frost will nip the foliage but it is the roots you are concerned about. Southern daylilies planted in the fall (isn't Flynn in Alabama?) need to be mulched here--not used to our extreme temps. Maybe we will have another mild winter. A really good "local" place to order daylilies from is Homestead Farms at Owensville. They have a website with photos. Nice plants, customer service and good prices. They also have hosta, ferns and some iris. My daughter has bought hosta's from them. She used to have the Owensville store when she was a DM for Wal-Mart Jewelry and she would stop by the nursery. Been awhile since I was there or ordered but don't think things have changed. What are the names of the ones you ordered?

We were dairy farmers for over 20 years. We recently sold some property to a girl whose mother dairies. We were talking about milking the other day and the mother said how she liked the cows. I told her that if I had to go to work again--meaning holding down a public job---I would rather milk cows again. True it is confining but between milkings you are home able to do what you want. I really dreaded mornings in the wintertime though and the flies in the summer not to mention trying to keep the milk inspector happy!!

Peaches are one of my DH favorite things. I would like to be able to find some good ones here---need to take a look around---check out the farmer's market tomorrow.

I remember now seeing Ned on a Fox Midwest game where they were actually showing the Springfield team. I wish they would more often. He is one of those childhood memories for me that won't go away. Not that he needs to. That sounded bad! I just remember thinking, "Gee he looks like a happy man!" I was born in Branson and lived there for the first 9 yrs. of my life.

You guys were talking about Homested Farms in Owensville. They are close by. I have heard great things about them and I consult their website whenever I am researching daylilies, but hate to admit that I've never taken the time to go. But they do come highly recommended around here.

Glad to hear some of you finally got some rain. Wish you could have had all that I got. Yesterday was a gully washer for us. Most of it rushed down the hill. Still got a inch and seven-tenths. More rain tomorrow. And reporting that next week is going to have nights in the 60's which will be a nice relief. Today we are supposed to have high of 99. YUCK!! And with that dreaded humidity. I'm glad I got out there in the rain early this week and weeded. Now I can stay inside and escape this nasty heat. My daughter insisted on wearing her new blue jeans today and she'll regret it. They'll be stinking to her!
