Sounds like the culprits on some of my tomatoes. However, I've found turtles are causing a lot of damage.

The first year I lived here, I babied a small tomato plant that didn't produce much produce at all. There was one small tomato that I was watching for perfect ripeness. On it's chosen afternoon, a particularly hot dry day I looked down at my meager tomato to see a turtle munching away, straining his neck to reach. I figured he needed it worse than I did, so I let him munch away. I had hoped that the turtle would grant me three wishes in exchange for the refreshing ripe tomato. Now that I think about it, maybe he did.

When we lived in E TX we had fire ants one year that made a small hole in bottem of cantelope and completely hollowed out the cantelope.
