You are in California, where no Passiflora grow naturally. They are all introduced, and you have no idea which one you are looking at. Many, or should I say most Passiflora species have cyanide in most parts of the plant. The only part that is safe to ingest is the ripe fruit, and even then, not all Passion fruits are edible.

The specific species you are after you will likely never find in a California garden, so quit trying.

All passiflora generate cyanide as a natural defense against being eaten. For the "herbal" passiflora sold, either for tea or dietary supplements, the plant is treated and processed to remove the toxicity. I don't know the process and doubt many here on this forum do, either. The only part of the plant safe to eat is the pulp of the fully-ripened fruit. Anything else can make you quite ill.

Yes, unfortunately. Not ALL Passifloras have enough to be damaging from just a few leaves, but many are. Do you know which species you have?
