I grow all my canna in pots, large non porous pots with deep saucers. They require lots and lots of water, I try to not let the saucers ever go dry which usually requires heavy watering, sometimes twice daily. I also feed them weekly throughout the summer growing season. I have a few pots of tropicanna, wyoming, pretoria and even musafolia is grown in a (very large) pot as well as a few noids.

I grow in pots - any kind will work --however they will not make it through the winter.
As it gets cold, remove from pot, remove soil, cut off old foliage, store in a cool ( not freezing location) in a box with perlite, or maybe sawdust. Ocassionally give some water. You do not want the roots to get and stay too wet. Next year cut off dead dried up sections of roots and repot - Water and give some fertilizer and plant after all signs of frost are past.

jacgia, I have a much easier system. I put soil-potted cannas in a glazed pot of water, eventually weighted down w/ a brick if the pot starts tipping w/ the heavy foliage.
In the winter, just cut down the foliage and bring in the potted cannas, store in the cellar as is; bring up and out gradually next spring.

Mindy what a relief to learn this new system. i used to dig them up and store them in peat moss etc but no more!!!

I just dug up my first-year cannas last week and they got HUGE. The tubers tripled, at least. How do you keep up with the pot size? I like the idea of the submerged pots, and I have a big trough I could use for a nice big grouping. But how big do you make the pots you use for the plants?
