I think it depends on the variety of edulis that you have. To be on the safe side I'd use another variety of edulis as a pollinator. You might want to contact Mark4321 or eristal, both post on this forum. They can give you a definite answer.

Thanks Karyn. Unfortunately, I grow only a few P. edulis varieties, and get very few flowers, thus rarely fruit. Perhaps it is my lack of humidity? In any case, I'm pretty sure Karyn is right that it depends on the variety, but you will almost always have better luck hand crossing. Mark4321 would be far better at helping with this than I. He had a monster crop last year.

Thanks, I have been pollinating from different flowers on the same plant as my other plants haven't opened any flowers yet, it seems to be working as two have formed fruit already.

The common purple fruited edulis is usually P. edulis edulis, and is self-fertile. The yellow fruited edulis is usually edulis flavicarpa and must be cross pollinated. There are quite a few crosses and varieties, some of which are self fertile, but it sounds like the "Large Black" that you have is probably a variant of edulis edulis.
