I've got my big incense planted right against the house, adjacent to the front sidewalk and haven't had any problems. I take it you mean buckling the concrete with its roots? Passis are vigorous, but not *that* vigorous. The only thing I'd suggest is making sure there's a trellis close by, because they really like to climb and show off their flowers better when they can get elevation.

This is probably going to sound like a silly question but,...

Should I plant in a container and bring indoors for the winter, or plant in ground and mulch on top for wintering outdoors? I live in the mountains of West Virginia in zone 5.

Not entirely sure which passion flower species you have. If it's an edulis, then you absolutely have to bring it in. It will die a quick death in your winter. If you have an incarnata, which is the native wild maypop, then it'll die to the ground over the winter but regrow from the roots every spring.
