It looks like amaranth or amaranthus; an ornamental one.

I agree with Helen. It is a gorgeous thing. I had a package of free 'red' seeds and it included a red variety of amaranth. I tried to dry it, but it turned an ugly brown.

Yep one of the amaranths. There are many so don't know the species. I have a similar one that a neighbor gave me seeds of a few years ago. It self seeds like crazy, but I let a few plants live each year. The young plants are edible, cooked like spinach, I am told. Learned that too late this year, but will try next year instead of throwing my extras into the compost pile.

Wow...finally the name to go with the plant....THANKS...I have passed this on to my sister in California as well so we'll stop referring to it as that "red plant that puts out so many seeds". Thanks a bunch. I've Googled the plant and have only found pictures with the green leaves, not red with the hanging type flower. Would like to find the true name of the plant if at all possible.
