Bad year for coneflowers?

Hi,

My coneflowers were so gorgeous this spring, but then the petals started turning black and the whole plant seemed affected to some degree or other. I cut all the flowers off but the new ones did it, too. I wound up just cutting every single coneflower to the ground. I sure hope it doesn't happen next year! What a shame! Anyone else have this problem or know what the heck this could be?
