Help with Passiflora incarnata

I am strugling with a sprout of Passiflora incarnata. It is slowly drying up, and all that is left now is a bare 3 inch stem that is almost completely dried up. However, the 4 inch roots extending from two sides at the base of the stem where looking OK when I took it out of the ground and potted it. I was wondering if the roots, if they don't dry up, could still produce another stem and new growth.

I would appreciate any help.
