I've only grown them by planting the tubers, but they do self-seed for many people so they must be pretty easy from seed.

Like all perennials, the seeds need to undergo cold stratification before they will sprout.

You can cold-stratify them several ways.

1) You can put the seed packet in a zip-lock bag to keep moisture out and put the seeds themselves in the refrigerator or freezer for a while. I'm not sure how long, but probably a month or two, to simulate winter. Then remove then from the cold storage and plant them according to packet directions either in flats if you want to start them indoors, or in the garden location where you want to plant them outdoors.

2) You can plant them in a pot or small flat as the packet directs and then put the container in a sealed plastic bag in the freezer for a month or two to simulate winter.

3) You could winter sow them this winter shortly after the winter solstice.

thanks. the link was exactly what i needed.

i went to a garden club plant sell in muskogee today. what fun. got so many plants. i got some ferns but they said they don't grow tall, and some columbine, and i think the columbine grows much taller. how were to put all the stuff. then an herb lady was there with all kinds of goodlies, even lemon verbena. she said it can die in the winter, like forever. so i got one for a pot to take in during the winter and the other i planted somewhere. so much stuff.

Plant sales are fun and you often find more interesting stuff at them than you'll see at standard nurseries.

In general, Lemon Verbena is not cold hardy in areas where the low temps drop below about 20-22 degrees in the winter, but I've had it survive the occasional mild winter here. I like it so much, I buy one every year if my plant from the previous year was winter-killed.
