Christie, I think we'll have to wait and see on the fall colors. Here in central arkansas many trees have already shed after the record dry september. I think the oaks might finish big however. I did a hike in the ouachita mountains west of little rock on saturday and the trees seemed to be either shed or still green.
On your maples color depends on the weather and the individual tree. Seedling grown red maples are often yellow. Some of the named cultivars such as 'October Glory' and 'Red Sunset' were chosen for their fall color. On the viburnums, if they have colored in the past then they can be a miss on certain years. I have a v. burkwoodii that colors wonderfully and the flowers in the spring are an intense clove smell.
I'm heading to the ozarks this weekend, so hopefully some of the sugar maples, hickories, and beech will still be on fire. It seems like in off years there are always occasional trees which put on a show. One can always hope.

Christie, I think Pauln is right. This was not a good season for color. The only thing that was really good was the old faithful Euonymous alatus ,aka burning bush. We took a drive to Eureka Springs a week ago and it was very disappointing.

I planted a red maple, I think October Glory, this fall and it hasn't done anything. Maybe just too soon. I sure hope it has good reddish orange color. Most of our trees are very common Ash, Elm and Silver Maple and I want some color.

I found some sassafras seedlings in the field and am going to try to transplant some now we have had all these rains. They say it can't be done, but what have I got to loose? They are the first to color and are a wonderful orange.

GD, It is possible to transplant sassafras seedlings, but not easy. I'm constantly pulling them up around here. My Mom wanted one, so we kept trying with the transplants until we got one to live for her. I saved some sassafras seeds this year if you're interested.

Christie, this is just a bad color year. I think the drought in September is what caused it, because we have had the cool nights. It has been several years since we had a really spectacular fall color show.

I have to say in my short life-span in Missouri I have seen better years for Fall color. This year just didn't seem to have the "pizzazz" of previous years and a lot of trees seemed to have dropped leaves earlier than usual.
