William what is the advantage of a grafted tomato plant? It sounds like an interesting science project.

thinking disease resistance and yield. one of the first ones mentioned was brandywine. a low yielder for me. i am guessing the rootstock is maxifort but they didn't say.

My guess for the rootstock would have been Beaufort, and I would have been wrong.

I saw this thread and thought I'd add what little I know about it (which isn't very much).

The rootstock is Emperador, and I've linked some info from the company that is doing the grafting work for Territorial. At the bottom of the document that's linked below, there are some good links to tomato grafting research.

A couple of us on the Oklahoma Forum have toyed with the idea of grafting and have discussed it a couple of times, but haven't gotten around to trying it.

never heard of that rootstock. thanks for the link. 3 yrs ago maxifort was the big thing for grafting. tried it and failed . if things loosen up here might try it again.

You're welcome. I think this is the first time I've seen Emperador on the commercial market in the USA. The research universities are working with a lot of tomato rootstocks, but they seem slow to make it to the commercial market, or at least in quantities a hobby gardener would purchase.

I remember when Maxifort was the big new thing, and then after than it was Beaufort and now I guess it is Emperador. Next year or the year after, Emperador probably will be "out" and something else will have replaced it.
