I have not read that it is night blooming, but it would not surprise me with P. mucronata being half of it's parentage, and that is indeed a night bloomer. Ours has yet to bloom, so I am afraid I cannot tell you from experience. I will keep you updated if/when it happens.

I found an interesting article on attempts to recreate P. 'Kew Gardens'. There it says that 'Kew Gardens' is night blooming. Also a hypothesis is stated that not P. mucronata but P. galbana could be one of the parents based on the fruit.

Of course one reason why a flower would be open at night is so as to be pollinated not by birds or bees or butterflies, but by bats.

There are several bat pollinated Passifloras, P. mucronata and P. galbana among them. Myles Irvine's site has links to info and pictures on such plants.

Maybe the sphinx moths are pollinators? That's about the only thing around here that pollinates my brugs. The only bats we have here are insectivorous. My night blooming epis are bat pollinated in their natural habitat and you can see that the shape of the bloom is perfect for the bats. I don't see that with the Kew Gardens blooms.

I have Kew Gardens (previously known as Kewensis) and it is outside all year round as are all my passis. I have always found that it opens in the evening and is closed by morning. I have had viable seed hand pollinating with Caerulea and Constance Eliot but so far have not flowered any of the seedlings.

I've tried caerulea, incense and Clear Sky pollen with no luck. I don't have anymore Kew Gardens buds at the moment but will try again if I get anymore. My growing season is almost over. I only have about 2 months left before my plants get cut back and moved into the greenhouse. I'm going to try and keep my late blooming passies as intact as possible in the hopes that they'll bloom in the greenhouse. It's just a matter of space which is very limited.
