Starting seeds

What advantage is it to planting seeds, let them germinate, and then transplanting them in larger pots. I get very good germination, why not just put the seeds in large pots, until they are planted in the garden.

The only reason I put seeds in smaller plug trays to start is to be able to most efficiently utilize my heat source (lightlulb suspended in a cardboard box). I can start hundreds of pepper seedlings under heat and as soon as each one sprouts individually (in a plug), I transplant them into their own 2.5" square of 3.5" square pots and put under fluorescents (no heat source then).

I grow well over a 100 plants a year. If I was doing 10-20, I'd just do what you said and avoid the "double" work.

The soil mix is also vastly different between what seedlings need, and what mature plants pumping out a ton of peppers, need.

I'm a complete newbie as I started my first garden last season. I tried to start the pepper seeds inside but lets just say the package never said how MANY seeds to put in and I dropped the entire thing in =/ Needless to say I had no idea what I had done until it was to late. I was just jumping for joy seeing all the green as it grew and looking like an idiot the whole way as they died. It was a few months later that a friend dying with laughter told me my mistake.

I ended up buying the seedlings planted already from a nursery and they did very well.

My question and sorry for the long story I just thought perhaps you would take my newbie status in to consideration when I ask what might be a stupid question...

    What soil are you using??

I love peppers and won't soon give up but starting on the right track might help along with a "lighter" hand when sowing. lol

I have never grown peppers, so I've been reading your comments about growing peppers with great interest.

Does anyone know how long the seeds from a fresh pepper need to dry before planting them?

Last night, the cook at a local Spanish restaurant gave me a bag of his delicious Rocoto peppers. I cleaned out the seeds to plant and I'm wondering how and when to plan them.

    Thanks,

John, Thanks for the encouragement. I think I'll plant some seeds, later this week.
