Windmill Severe Damage! Any ideas????

Hey everyone! Ok well its 78 degrees here this afternoon here in chicago....and i decided to take my winter protection down on my windmill.....if it gets really cold or rain i will just throw some heavy plastic over it as i dont suspect any really cold arctic blasts here any more. I knew going into this that i had some cold damage just i didn;t know how much....well its pretty bad! but on the flip side some fronds have some nice green spots so i assume its not dead....i put some copper based fungicide in the crown today and i gave the palm a nice watering and sprinkled some epsom salts around it. I assume it was thirsty because i didn;t water at all this winter.....what should i do about the crown as it is all brown but NO spear pull whatsoever.....everything is nice and tight! here are the pics......any ideas or suggestions to get this guy back this summer? thanks guys! pics.....

and
and last one...

I have had that same problem with my male trachy every year. I just trim off all the fronds it will bounce back

Mike, the one you have trouble with...is that the stiff leafed or the droopy leafed palm? I have one of each, and can't decide which one might be hardier if planted in the ground.

Trim off the dead parts of the leaves(keep the parts that are still green) and keep a close eye on it,I don't want to bum you out but its not a good sign that the newest petioles are dicolored like that, also I would pull the mulch back on warm sunny days,I have been doing this and my soil temps are almost 60F at a depth of 4",this has got my T.wags spear starting to move!,70 yesterday and 80 today did'nt hurt either.
I removed my protection too or they would bake.

Thanks for the info guys....I am gonna trim back the fronds and just leave the green parts.....hopefully it will make it through....should I leave the half emerged all brown frond too? Plus their is a new frond that is brown about half inch big starting to emerge brown as well. Let me know thanks

No need to mess with the spears, they will give you a good indication when they start to move again and hopefully you will see some green push out of there, good luck and definitely keep any moistue and freezing temps away from the crown, that is a nice sized healthy palm so it should be able to come back from this even if it does have spear pull, keep a close watch on that center cuz you may need to operate(by this I mean cutting it down from the top until you find living tissue) if it loses its spear and outer leaves-hope it pulls through for you!

I had two sabal minors kick the bucket. They were doing great all winter even in the codest nights. I hade them covered by upside down pots and burried in snow. The snow melted and then we had one more arctic blast and wham! two dead about 3 looking like crap. Hit 69 here yesterday and I got a head start on my lawn work.

Andyx2,thats a bummer!are you sure they are dead? did you leave them in the ground? maybe they will come back,I have found them to be quite tough and able to come back even when they look dead,I have yet to see a Sabal get spear pull, oops,my S.tamaulipas did but that was inside.

Ryan the one that keeps defoliating is the droppy leaved one. The one doing good is my female and she has the stiff leaves and a slight curve to the trunk
