Sounds like too much water. They need to be in well drained soil, and only watered when the soil gets dry. Don't keep them continually wet and more sun is better.

Mine is doing the same thing. I cut down on the watering and trying more sun. I just put my greenhouse/coldframe back up. I will put it out there when I have the time to watch it. The mistake I made was to prune it. I thought it would grow a shoot by now. That was 6 weeks ago. Nothing yet. filix

I lost two alata the same way this year. I had them on the same watering schedule as my edulis, but it really looks like they're far more sensitive to wet. Cut back on the watering, and make sure the soil dries out a good bit between waterings.
