I have used shucks as mulch. I don't thing you would want them very deep because they may heat, also they are a little slow to break down and to till in. I thinks all things are better composted first, but I seldom do.

Other people may not agree but I use the shucks to mulch the middles of tomato's & peppers and I use the stalks to lay in the middles of every thing. They do take a long time to rot but they work wonderfully to keep the middles between the rows mulched.
