Thanks I know we have rabbits around us. I see them all the time. I just wasn't sure if they were the culprit. What do you suggest? A fence of some sort? Thank you so much for your reply tj :)

I always need to fence my pole beans due to rabbits. Be sure the mesh is small enough for bunnies which are around in spring as well. Be aware that cutworms can also do similar damage. Look closely at the cut. A rabbit will usually leave a clean diagonal cut, a cutworm will have just a bit more (not much) raggedness to the cut.

I don't see any cutworms thanks for the info! I tried a spray last night to use on the perimeter and the rabbits still got their midnight snack! So I will be getting a fence today. They also got 2 of my cucumber plants that started to grow. They haven't touched the bush beans. Is there a list somewhere so I can fence all the vegetables the rabbits will eat? I don't want to fence the whole garden if I don't have to :)

I had a similar issue with my pole beans last year something was cutting off the leaves cleanly, just like with scissors. After some research, I discovered it was likely cutworms or perhaps even birds. The small holes in the soil might be a clue too. Try placing collars around your plants to protect them, and maybe even sprinkle some diatomaceous earth near the base. It worked for me!
