flowers already

You are not going to believe this. I ordered some cuttings from Just Plumerias back in December as just sticks. I have heard you need to root them and then wait a year or so before you get flowering right? Well I have been rooting 5 sticks I purchased,in December and stuch them on a heat pad and in just one month and a 1/2, they are already rooted..HERE'S the kicker....I HAVE ONE THAT IS GROWING FLOWERS ALREADY AND IT IS ONLY A CUTTING!!!I almost freked out when I noticed it this weekend. It is only in rooting stage and already in flowering stage. Has anyone ever had this happen to them. Is this uncommon? I am so happy..:-)

I didn't even have to feed them yet nor have they gone outside yet since it is winter up here in Mass. and I have them on a window sill with sun and grow lites only!!:-)

    Hi Mike,
Congratulations! But it is rather common for inflos to form during the rooting process. I have only been growing them a little over a year, and about 11 of the 18 have bloomed already. Some people sacrifice the inflo so the rooting process is completed quicker. If you let the inflo grow it takes longer to root, since its sending energy to both the roots and the inflos. I have never had the nerve to cut a growing inflo, the emerging flowers are alot smaller than usual. But yippee for flowers!!! By the way, inflos doesnt always mean rooting has completed, so by careful with your watering practices until you have some nice sized leaves. That usually indicates rooting is growing well.
    Hope this helps!!

Hi, Mike and Randy, Congrats on your inflo, Mike! Flowers in January is awesome! I got a cutting last summer that has been a real slow starter. Towards the end of summer I noticed and inflo had started. Like Randy, I didn't have the heart to cut it off. It finally started blooming by the middle of November, and finished by the end of December. Since then, all the leaves have went crazy! lol It didn't have an open leaf the entire time it was blooming, not it's got bunches of leaves out or coming out! Gotta love those plumeria!!!!! Crafty

Congrads Mike !! Sounds like you're doing everything right !!

Randy: you had 11 out of 18 inflos from your cuttings ?? Wow that's amazing. Are you doing anything "special" or do you just have a SUPER GREEN THUMB ??

Crafty: Blooms in Dec that's GREAT !!

Last spring I had a cutting that sprouted an inflo before leaves or roots. As the majority, I didn't have the heart to cut if off. It did bloom, small flowers and the fragrance was heavenly !! The cutting got wrinkley and shriveled, because it had no roots to speak of... Like Crafty's, after it bloomed it went absolutely wild leafing out and plumping up. All its energy was being sent to the inflo, not the rooting process. I will be anxious to see what it does this blooming season !!
    Happy 2008 blooms everyone !!
