There are so many caterpillar species which look alike. Many are either cutworms, armyworms, earworms, etc. At this time of year, and on the plants you've mentioned, I am going to suggest that your pest is one of the many caterpillars called 'cutworms'. (The army worm is a type of cutworm, btw.)

Thanks for the comment. After reading a bit about cutworms they seem to be particularly difficult to deal with. I'm finding that any pests that hide in the soil are creating a real problem for me. I don't use chemicals thus I'm stuck hand picking at night with a flashlight. :0(

@Dan - Can you expand on your "paper cups" comment? Is it similar to the "beer traps" I use for me slugs maybe?

You want to put some kind of collar around the seedlings. Paper cups, empty toilet paper rolls, old seed starting containers anything to act as a barrier.

With some plants the barriers would be easy, others that have leaves contacting the soil would be tough. I had thought about buying some of the clear tube material used to slip over a florescent tube, then cut into short lengths that would allow light still. I think it will be slippery enough to prevent the little critters from climbing up.

Looks exactly like an Oak Moth Larvae, I've caught one just recently- it had fallen into my pool. They are tree pests, although, the fact that they've been eating other plants is a possible option, similar moths and their larvae feed on tomato's as well, so I wouldn't be surprised...
