I'm wondering if you recently had your roof replaced and had them install lead boots for the vent pipes. When I replaced my roof 2 years ago the roofer mentioned that the squirrels will knaw on the lead boots as a means to sharpen their teeth. So I had them install the rubber or plastic boots for this reason. (Found out after they had taken off the old boots that these were of the plastic or rubber type.)

I would say that it would be cheaper to hire the neighbors kids with a bounty on each one they bring you from YOUR lot!

I use the hav-a-heart traps for squirrels, and find them quite effective. Even though the other squirrels see their friends in the trap, they are still waiting to get in themselves when the trap is empty. I suggest a slice of apple with peanut butter on it as bait. I find that trapping one squirrel a day for a couple of weeks really helps, and is a lot less expensive than a professional exterminator who often use the same traps. You can bury the dead squirrels in an area you then plant with a decorative plant which can use the nutrients. If you have an enclosed spot where you can put it, gopher poison with strychine is quite effective. The squirrels will be dead before they move more than a few feet. Use the peanut variety so that you have a very attractive material to them. Note that you need to be quite careful with this stuff since it is so deadly.
