Enough already

This may be the coldest and wettest Spring I've ever encountered. We've had roughly 4 or 5 hrs. of sun the last 2 weeks, keeping most of the flowering perennials in a sort of limbo. My windmill doesn't seem to mind, but my mother-in-law brought up some additional plumeria from Florida, and I think they're getting pissed. Beaches are empty...bars, I assume, packed. As Jimmy Buffet would sing, "we've got a lot to drink about". Currently about 60 degrees and cloudy yet again.

Yeah the weathers pretty cool here too. I posted on another forum on this website about how my thanksgiving cactus was budding outside in this cold. I hope we see some 80s soon. Good things are than my plumerias arent too upset, but are growing slower, my windmill is actually growing pretty fast, my cannas love the rain weve been getting and doubled in size over the past two weeks, and by the fourth of july my thanksgiving cactus will be in full bloom.

The bad thing is summer doesnt seen to be comming, and my hibisucs isnt as nice as it usually is.

There is apparently a powerful Aleutian Low sitting in the Alaska area that is allowing colder Canadian air to stagnate. It seems that it is not budging in the foreseeable future.

Maybe by July the below normal temps and constant rain in the Eastern half of the US will break.

By the way, without going into too much detail, the cyclical patterns of this and some other weather phenomenon over the last few hundred years has shown a normal warming trend the last half of the 20th century and provides excellent scientific rationale that global warming is not "real"...FWIW

Global warming seems to be less and less believeable. I still think what we do to our surroundings is 100% wrong and that the ozone is depleting, but I think it might be too early to tell if we are causing the warming or if its a regular cycle our planet goes through. We only have accurate records from at best 100 years and some scattered ones for the past 250 years, but nothing far back enough or accurate enough to give a definate answer if global warming is caused by us or not. Im not sure if it can be ruled out yet, but I dont think its a guaranteed fact. The earth is more complex than our records can show.
Hopefully the jet stream migrates back north and high pressure moves in because I wll take muggy sunshine over low 70s and a cold, cloudy, drizzle any day.

We've had almost a full month of June gloom (overcast skies) here in normally sunny SoCal. I need a tan and my plants need some warm sunny weather soon!

I know what you mean, usually up here (Nor Cal) were in the 90's. Its been in the 79-83, with cloud cover and rain. This week though its supposed to get warmer, hope so.

Sorry you are having a cooler than normal summer in Northeast, boys. Pity party aside, global warming is an undisputed fact among reputable scientists the world over. Overall average temps in US as a whole are not down, and record highs --this year, as in last 10 -- are leading record lows by 2:1 margin. Global warming is here, even if it not a linear process. Denying something doesn't make it less true.

No disrespect desrtlvr, but Global warming is not proven and just as many scientists disput the theory as say it is true. I am really sorry you have fallen to the Al Gorey money making maching, cause he sure is getting VERY wealthy of it.
Here are a few scientists opinions on the matter (a few = around 17,000): http://www.aproundtable.org/tps30info/globalwarmup.html

Like I said, I mean no disrespect.

Are temperatures around the globe warmer in the last 30+ years compared to the first half of the 20th century: yes

Are greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation and pollution bad for the environment: absolutely.

Is the warming trend, shrinking polar ice caps and other weather anomolies a direct result of man-made pollutants: very, very questionable.

Scientists cannot possibly know this definitively. We don't even have the ability to predict the weather accurately from one day to the next. Our understanding of the environment is at its infancy. We don't have the answers. All we have is lots of speculation and some loud opinions.

The earth has experienced dramatic climate changes over millions of years. Life evolves and changes. How can we know that this is not happening right now? We used to believe strongly that evolution involved incremental changes. We know now that changes are rapid, in between periods of stability.

Our time on this planet is a blink of the eye in the galactic time frame. We know a lot, but there is much more we don't know yet.

I know this is off-topic and I'm probably just fanning the flames, but I'm a 20+ year member of a well known environmental organization and have canvassed for legislation on behalf of the California League of Conservation Voters, and even I think Gore's a quack. The 20-30 year cycle concept is more plausible. I remember when "they" were predicting an impending Ice Age during 70's. LOL

People don't need to be told the world is ending to "think green".

"Global warming" is another way for the elite to further their control of how businesses run and how people act. Sounds familiar right?theres also the government created financial crisis. Please rescue us from the hot weather and poverty. In return we will be very obedient.

    Where is that frmmi?

good reply post scaldude. I believe we should do everything we can to NOT damage our environment, but with the evidence we have, the cycle concept you speak of, that would be a much better explanation.

Didn't mean to start a global warming debate again, just pointing out the rotten weather we've been experiencing 'round here. The entire month of June, it has either been raining or overcast and gloomy with below avg. temps. I believe this pattern is not restricted to the Northeast. In any case, there's not much to do but wait it out. One thing I won't do, is listen to the "do as I say, not as I do" crowd including Al Gore and those Hollywood dopes, preaching from their massive estates, or private/corporate jets, or limos. I think it's remarkably arrogant to think we can somehow determine how Mother Earth will behave. Ice ages and melts have been happening since the dawn of time...or at least, since this planet became "dynamic". All long before mankind came around with his big, bad SUV. Mother Earth will swat us away like flies. She has to worry about herself, including natural climate change, continental shift, and threats from cosmic debris. Of course, I don't advocate widespread pollution...just the opposite. I just don't think our behavior on this planet has the effect those who profit mightily from the "panic" would have us all believe. The hypocrisy from that crowd is gaulling. Again, apologies for getting this topic rolling.

no appologies needed Trish. GWarming is a discussion that gets brought up from time to time on this forum, and there really isnt anything we can do to stop it :)
Thanks for the input, and I agree 100%.

We had a cool wet spring as well, seems to have settled down the last several weeks to a typical hot and muggy Virginia summer. Not sure if the Tracys like it so much, but my other palms and naners do!

    Good luck!

I forget the comedian, but there's a routine that goes something like - 'what if the Earth needs plastic...humans were created and evolved to the point where they can make plastic for the Earth' LOL

This is one of the most common-sense, logical threads I have bumped into in a long time. I am so glad there are others out there who have not swallowed the entirety of "the planet has a fever" hooey!

    Conserve - yes!

Cut back on fossil fuels - of course!

    Don't pollute - certainly!

Armageddon is coming, and we single-handedly caused it by not buying a Prius...not so sure...

It's NOT cold and rainy everywhere this June. In Mississippi, we're having a heat wave (temps in the 90s and up to 100) and a drought. But one month of hot, dry weather doesn't prove or disprove global warming, of course. Have you noticed people are now calling it "climate change," instead of global warming?

We should just start calling it "weather" again, and stop trying to make a buck off of it...or 100 million bucks, as some have ;-).
