Harvest picking up

Gradually picking more tomatoes. Picking some of the 4-6 ounce tomatoes now. Dana's Dusky Rose and another Glick's 18. This one was at 6 ounce. They seem to be running a little bigger this year. A bird had found it turning also. Several more look to be on the edge of blushing. With the heat having some disease issues. Sprayed one patch with Daconil Monday evening. Overall most are hanging in. EB is the main problem along with the insect vectored disease. But have had issues with one plant I'm still not certain about. Okra and the peppers are setting fruit now. So won't be long. May pick a lot of the sweet corn tonight. As it isn't holding as long as normal on the stalk. Have a few that are pleasant surprises with how many they have set. If they taste good may have to change my favorites list some. May pick my first Black Cherries tomorrow night and Amish Mayberry by the end of the week. Jay

WooHoo - The harvest begins 'bigtime' for Jay. It is funny how quickly your tomatoes make when you have to be so late putting them in the ground.

Jay, On another thread, '2010 fall and winter gardening' we have been talking about your coldframes and several people wanted to see a picture. Looks like everything moved out of your albums when the garlic moved in, so we can't find a pic. Can you post one, please. Tnx.

Jay - how can just a few miles make such a difference? I'm picking a bushel of tomatoes every other day. I've been picking squash, beans and cukes for a month now! The last of the 3 varieties of corn are coming out this weekend. I'm seeing a ton of disease issues too, but this is one of those years one just has to say "what the heck".

Yes, please do try to post pics of the cold frame!!! (like I need another project!)

    Jay,

I'm glad the harvest is picking up. I bet your sisters are glad too. : )

How is the one sickly plant with the odd disease you and I cannot figure out? Better? Worse? The same?

I hope you're enjoying all those yummy maters.

Today we had Red Brandymaster on BLTs and it wasn't that special. I don't know if that is the fault of the variety or the heavy rain we had a few days back or what.

Carol and Paula I will look to see if I still have any pictures when I get the time. I cleaned up the Photobucket site and while eliminating pictures from up to 3 years back I guess I cleaned the cold and hot frame pictures out also.

Paula in my opinion the main difference is the approx 120 miles north I live of you. And then living what weather men call close to the Rocky Mountains we get some frosts here that they don't get just 60-80 miles east of us. Really I'm early for a normal year. I usually don't pick first fruit till the 10th-15th of July and plants really start producing till around the fist of Sept.. If Mother Nature cooperates and the insects stay at bay I should be ahead of that this year.

Dawn I will email you about the plant and what I've done and plan to do. As you know I should of pulled it. It has done some better but then I looked it over last night. Need to make a box to send it off. Have at least one more to send. It has been pulled a few days so that might not help.

My Pink Brandymaster has only set one fruit. Unless it really picks up or tastes outstanding it won't be back. I still don't want to jinx anything but I have a few of the crosses that look good. If they taste as good as they look. As I've mentioned as far as setting and being a nice vigorous plant Big Cheef has my hopes up. I would say at least 15 fruit set now. Hopefully I will taste the first one within a week. Maybe I've found that one that will set well here and taste good. If so I may plant ten of them next year.LOL. Probably 4-5 which is a lot of one variety for me. Jay

Jay - I have only gotten 2 Pink Brandymasters. Picked them both a bit early to make sure I got them and not the birds or squirrels. One was last nite and a dangedworm got to it first. I agree, unless the taste is just fabulous, it won't be back.

I've got 3 Tuxhorns this year and not a single bloom on any plant. With the disease from all the rain, I'm yanking them as soon as it's cool enuf the be out more than an hour of the day when I'm home.

Hope you get bowls and bowls of the Black Cherries!

Hi, Jay, and congratulations on your harvest. I keep a close eye on what you are growing and what you are saying about tomatos! I just planted my Black Cherry in a 20 gal. container in the 5:1:1 mix, amended a bit, but it already has a few blooms on it, so maybe it won't be too much longer til I get one to taste.

I am definitely NOT a pepper lover, ugh.....just the thought of them makes me a bit ill, with the exception of Jalapenos for salsa, which I think I'll try next year, just for that purpose.

Now if I could just grow some black beans........sigh....

Lots of cherries and plum types today. Picked one Black Cherry. Think them and the Amish Mayberry are about two days away from being ready to sample. My first Big Cheef has a very slight blush this afternoon. If you read about a SW KS tomato grower going beserk you will know that something got it before I picked it. LOL. Usually when you anticipate one so much a person is disappointed. But I anxious about this one. The later ones will be bigger it looks like. I will save seeds from the first few just in case something happens to the others. Jay

I have started adding a few pictures to my album on Photbucket. I'll attach the link. I took a few of my sweet potatoes I have in the main garden and one of my Super Star onions that did so well. I will try to get more took and uploaded as I have time. Jay.
