Crape Myrtles

I'm wondering if this is happening to anyone else. It must be heat and drought. My Red Rocket and Raspberry Dazzle Crape Myrtles both have started blooming white. Ann

I see some white on mine also. I have no idea what causes it. When most things are looking awful crepe myrtle still looks attractive though.

Yes...I thought I had maybe gotten the wrong variety when I purchased them earlier this year.
I have Pink Velour that have a few pink AND white blossoms on them...I've read where that can happen if you have a sudden temperature drop, so I'm thinking maybe that's a response to any sudden extreme change in weather? Not that we qualify - it's just gone from hot to hotter to hottest :~)

I don't necessarily think it takes a huge change in the weather....just one cooler, cloudier or rainy day can do it.

Steve Bender has written about this for Southern Living in past years. Let me find something he's written and link it.

I've noticed it seems more common in newer hybrids than in older varieties and Red Rocket is one of the varieties in which this odd flower color change is seen.

Thank you for all your comments on my weird plants. I enjoyed Steve Bender's article but we sure haven't had any cool damp days to contrast with our heat here. Good grief it is HOT...7:30pm and it is 111.2 out. We are going to draw straws to see who has to go to the end of the driveway to get the newspaper tonight. :) Ann

    Ann,

It could be it is just the prolonged heat is making the flowers do odd things. I've heard that these odd flower colors happen, but I've never seen anyone explain exactly how or why, so I kinda think they aren't really sure.

You'll see all sorts of oddities in prolonged heat when the heat interferes with a plants' normal processes, and this is especially true in terms of pollination, fertilization and fruit production. Corn plants this year have produced all sorts of odd tassels, silks and ears and I think the heat caused that.

The big wonder is that the crepe myrtles have the energy to bloom in this awful weather.

We've cooled down all the way to 96 now and the deer, rabbits, armadilloes (and who knows what else) are out roaming the yard. I bet 96 degrees feels pretty good to them after today's high temperatures.

Our dogs have been stuck inside in the air conditioning for most of each day for so long that they've forgotten what it is like to run around in the yard and play. When we let them out to do their doggie business, they rush to do it and then rush back in. Tim broke up the monotony of their lives today by taking them through the McDonald's drive-thru to get a hambuger. Is that what we've come to? The summer is so bad that we are entertaining the dogs with cheeseburgers?

You know, that newspaper still will be there in the morning at the end of the driveway, and y'all could walk down and pick it up in the cool morning air of 80 degrees or so.
