Well here's a good example of one. The fuzzy ones have now rotted and the moon cactus as you can see in the pic is just starting to rot. Dead now. I have so many different kinds I couldn't tell you! I have it planted in miracle gro cactus soil in a pot. And outdoors. I live in the desert too, so I don't know if the sun is too intense which doesn't make sense because we have a lot of natural cactuses here.

The difference between cactus in the ground and cactus in a pot is the room for roots.

In the ground, roots spread wide and shallow.
In a shallow bowl such as your planting, drainage is poor to begin with.

Suggest you provide partial shade and back off on the watering.

Well poor drainage makes sense. I've been wanting to put them in the ground anyway so they get big! Thank you for the advice. :)

the root issue.. is that that little pot.. gets really freakin hot ... and holds that heat.. and then interferes with root development .... adding water as secondary issue ...
if you burn the roots.. cook them ... then they cant process the water you provide.. etc ...

mother earth.. being slightly bigger than that small pot.. tempers temperature fluctuations ....

a pot that small.. i would suggest.. NEVER be in full sun .. the plants can handle it.. but the issue is the pot ..

get them in mother earth.. let them thrive.. and when it does.. and has babies.. cull some.. and put them back in pots.. and continue your learning curve ...

ps: if you had those pots indoors for winter .. and threw them back into full sun in spring.. hardening off might also be an issue ...
