growing roses to perfection.. requires a protocol of spraying.. every 4 to 6 weeks for both bugs and disease ... and that is why i gave up on them.. long ago ...

it should still flower.. regardless of this damage ...

see link since all i had to go on was your words... color doesnt get us very far on caterpillars ... as they are usually the color of what they eat ...

get rid of the plant.. and find one of the easy to grow roses.. that are disease resistant ... after it flowers of course ...

Rose slug. Small green worm-like things (but not caterpillars) that eat from the underside of the leaves to make "windows." Usually a quite temporary problem.

Rx: Search & destroy.

Rose slugs are easy to get rid of with strong sprays of water or insecticidal soap. As jean says, they don't stick around long.

Thanks guys. I think you are right. I don't have a sprayer, so I mixed up a pump of hand soap with water and a squirt of cooking spray and poured that on the plant. And I picked off a couple of the bigger ones, but the smaller ones are quite hard to see. They work fast, the bottom of the plant is fully decimated. If it flowers I'll post a picture to find out if this is something worth saving.

Thanks for the image as it confirms the ID: rose slug.

I appreciate the responsible use of soap in lieu of harsher chemical measures. Usually, most garden pests have simple solutions. Chemicals really have little effect on most pests. You just end up killing off their natural predators-and bees.
I had the same experience c roses in South Florida, no place for roses!!
