Air rifle, Hav-a-hart traps, pepper flakes/spray, commercial repellents, dog.....

I am trying to trap them and then drown them.

What virtue is it in exporting the problem.

The only problem is I haven't trapped any yet.
The peanut butter bait had claw markes on it. I didn't get the animal though. anybody else with luck?

find the holes in the ground.. step on them .. mark it .. come back and find out which holes are reopenned.. ergo, active ..

get a large black pot ... take the RAT trap .. with peanut butter ... place near hole.. invert bucket over trap and hole ... wait...

    good luck

PS: barn cats.. aka feral cats work wonders ... you need a good hunter ...

I caught 6 squirrels in my hav-a-hart before they stopped coming. Fresh carrots worked to entice them. I have a garden in containers (peppers, tomatoes, new zealand spinach) that they were feasting on, I bought plastic mesh (1/2' size) and made 24' high mesh cylinders around each container. What I found was that is the mesh was holding itself up, ie no metal structure(I used tomato cages) inside it), then the squirrels wouldn't try to climb over it because the top rim of the cylinder wouldn't support their weight. But if there was a structure and it was sturdy, it was just a new form of exercise to them and they were over and in, in a flash.

If your garden is in the ground, try fashioning plastic mesh around the plants, with as little support as possible. If it won't hold their weight, I don't think they'll try to climb it.

I caught a squirell in my havaheart trap and relocated it. Since then, I regularly see 2 young squirells in my yard (perhaps the offspring of the one I caught). They go into the trap, but are not heavy enough to trip the door. I've even gone up to one and petted it while it was eating one of my tomatoes! It growels a little, fidgets, and then continues eating. I guess I'll have to fatten it up, and wait for it to be big enough to trip the trap.

    John,

The Havahart model 1020 double-door cage trap is only 10 inches long, 3 inches wide, and 3 inches high. It can be used to catch chipmunks and even mice, so it should be small enough to catch your young squirrel.

    Thanks MM

I'm feeling a little guilty that I separated these two babies from their parent, so I'm seeing that they get bigger before I relocate them. These two babies are so tame that I could probably catch them by hand if I tried. I've actually petted one of them!

My garden is nearly done for the season anyway, so I have all winter to get rid of the two new pests. Still, I may get the smaller havaheart trap like you suggested.

I am not having any luck trapping my ground squirrell that lives under my driveway. As far as I know, I only have one that has been seen on my deck and patio in the back. I to experienced something eating on my tomatoes this summer. I never thought the ground squirrell was the source..but now I know. I have put carrots, peanut butter on crackers with sunflower seeds on top, and ever pecans with no luck. We have a lot of acorns in our yard. Do you think he likes those better?

    Please Help!!!!

    GAgirl,

"We have a lot of acorns in our yard. Do you think he likes those better?"

Probably. With tasty acorns lying everywhere, it's hard to tempt a squirrel into a trap. You might try mixing some molasses and rolled oats into your peanut butter.

"I am not having any luck trapping my ground squirrel that lives under my driveway."

If you know where the den entrance is, you can use that to your advantage. Some wire cage traps are designed to place over a den entrance so the animal is in the cage as he emerges. Also, Ken's message on August 27, with respect to the rat trap and the pot, might be applicable here.
