are you sure the plant below is not flowering ...

if you fail to get an ID here.. try the name that plant forum....

it stretches my mind.. that something grew from seed.. to exceed the fence.. and flower... just this year .... even in z8 ... thats why i am thinking the plant below is flowering..

Your plant isn't a palm but a species of Yucca. Those are yucca flower stems.

thank you for your replies, I have had the plant in the garden for over 10 years, and have never seen flowers on it before, so I assumed that .it was some kind of weed, didn't know that Yukkas had flowers.

The plant appears to be New Zealand flax (Phormium tenax) rather than yucca and those are the flax flowers. In zone 8, NZ flax do not bloom with regularity so not at all surprised you have never seen them before.

ps. yuccas almost always have white flowers (occasionally pale pink) but never red or red-orange like these.
