Well, I wouldn't give up hope just yet. With some good watering, there's a chance they might rebound. I've seen some super-hot/dry spells of drought push both cukes and melons to the brink of death, even with consistent irrigation, only to have them rebound once the weather got a little cooler and the irrigation water then was able to be a bit more effective. Sometimes in hot, dry spells I can water enough to keep plants alive but not very productive, and then the weather cools off a bit and they come back to life. I hope that happens for you. Sometimes adequate water can work miracles when it comes to reviving nearly-dead plants.

Suggestion for next year's vacation? A drip irrigation line, sprinkler or soaker hose system set up on a timer. Unless the timer fails, it will not let you down like human beings might.

I took another trip a couple weeks ago to help my mom and the friend left to water was worried he would under water so he drowned everything. Its ok. I did lose quite a bit of cucumbers and several pots of misc herbs, flowers but he tried. My little pots were literally floating in 3" of water.
he did not kill my fig babies so all is well.
