How practicable is sisal? My carpet guy, who can sell sisal!, said that there was a fad about 6 years ago and that everybody ripped it up after 6 to 12 months and that it has not been used since. I love the look, BTW.

I like sisal. I DON'T like that your carpet guy bashed it like that. He should have offerred a measurable assessment of the product. I do know that depending on the type of sisal it can shed horribly and that it is not a cozy up type of carpeting option in that it can be scratchy. But I think that you can use the newer versions which have a smoother texture & weave and add a really interesting border and it would do very well in a low traffic area. It has a certain organic look to it that I am sure can be useful in any setting but if you are going to go whole hog, wall-to-wall with it then it's shelf life will be short and ugly.

My carpet guy bashed it as well. Maybe it has lower margins. I suggest that you contact someone who specialises in it and ask for a list of public places/retailers that have it installed. Visit them and ask them what they thought. I did that and found places that had it there for 6 months to five years. It wore quicker than carpets. It feels prickly under the feet. But I am getting it for my office.

I have wall to wall sisal in my home. It is about ten years old and has generally held up very well. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to clean...you can't use water on it...I can't stress this enough! I understand Seagrass is a bit easier to clean. It also 'dents' and you cannot remove the dents with an ice cube like a regular carpet. Some stains..like a terrible red wine stain, disappeared after several years, others...like water stains look awful. Hope this helps
