You have some very nice plants .What is the one in the white pot closest to the wall ?

Boy thats a lot. How do you manage to give everything enough light?

Hi topher. Thanks. Thats the trachycarpus fortunei that I got my husband (josh_palm_crazy) for Valentines Day this year. Its been in the ground since April 7th and we'll protect it during the winter.

Chad - We use a bunch of those compact fluorescents. Something like 23W = 100W. They get the job done for the amount of time the plants have to stay inside.

The other white pot lol ! The one with the bulby looking trunk.

Got it! LOL That is the Banana that bloomed this year. There is a huge difference from April 7th till Now Sept 1st. It was potted on February 20th.

Every plant has it's story.

The post above is from TTPalm. When a Husband and Wife share the same computer and post on the same forum things get a bit confusing. I'll try to remember to sign Jay out before I post. I'm pretty new at posting on Garden Web but I am familiar with many of the techniques and suggestion that people bring to this forum. I've been watching over Jay's shoulder for the last two years. He has a healthy obsession with tropicals and the obsession has slowly moved my way.

Back to palms, We started out with just two Banana plants. We have a total of 18 today, most of the 18 are our pups. I truly can not wait till next year.

I'm thinking of using some 26w=100w GE daylight spectrum cfls for my palms. Says 6500K on the package with 1600 lumens. Do the cfls really work? Do you leave them on all day or just a few hours?

They did the job for our plants. We turned them on from 10 or 11am and turned them off around midnight.

In your opinion, how many would you say would be needed for a few seedlings? Just one? Or would I need a couple lights?

I have always wanted to give these lights a shot =]

Two to be safe. This is track lighting( cheep and adjustable) . Our house is also south facing and the natural light helped I'm sure.

We started some of our robusta seedlings in a fish tank in baggies with soil. It worked great. We also started our Elephant Ears in the tank.
