Jungle Jack's disappointment

I have ordered from JJ in the past without a problem. A recent order turned out being a major PIA.

My package finally arrived today: Divine, Rhonda and California Sunset. The plants themselves are nice, healthy, and were packed well. My issue had more to do with poor communication.

At first I emailed an order request. A week goes by, no response. I called John and he apologized claiming that the new website had issues. Fine, I can accept that. I told him I would email an order again. Some time goes by, no response. I called again, he acknowledged that he did receive the email, but made me make the order over the phone.

He told me he would get back to me the following week to confirm the order and that the plants were in stock. No response. I had to call again and was met with apologies. He promised to ship the stuff out later in the week. I told him I would email him a FedEx delivery address where I would pick up the package. At this point I didn't trust anything related to the timing of delivery so sending direct to a FedEx location was safer than leaving a box outside.

I emailed a FedEx address. I received an email confirmation of the order, and I replied to that with another email about my FedEx request.

Then I get a call from FedEx that they have a package being sent to a wrong location and that it had to be re-routed. I was finally able to get my package today after a hassle. I looked at the delivery label and it was sent to a FedEx spot in a completely different town and zipcode. Luckily my telephone was correct. John at JJ really screwed this up.

To anyone looking to order from JJ, check and double check when and where your plants are going.

It's a good thing you posted this. Two weeks ago I sent in an order and I got a reply that same day confirming what I had ordered, and that was it. I sent another email last Wednesday asking when my order will be shipped and what the total will be and I still haven't heard anything. :( I don't know if i should just cancel my order or just wait.

K2FL posted on here regarding JJ's plumies in OKC.
Here is K2's pic of what was labeled as Premium Rainbow, but you may want to confirm with John to make sure as I got a JJ's Premium Rainbow via Sonia in 2007 that does not look like the one in K2's pic. The Premium Rainbow looks kind of like JL's Banana Berry plumie and similar to JJ's Big Red

Keep in mind that while John has always had a backyard grower retail order, It was not a simple as his new site. You had to call or fax an order which probably made most people just shy away. Now its just point and click. Add this new change on top the 100's of 1000's of wholesale plants shipping out this month and Im sure its a bit of a struggle. Is that an excuse, no Could they do things a bit better, sure but give it time.

freak4plumeria....thanks for the photo of what he sent (I think) disappointing when what I wanted was Temptation!

I did order with him by phone as I do all vendors as I like talking to a real voice.

There was no problem w/shipment/packing/timing/delivery...just correct order.....roxanne

    Hi all,

Just wanted to add my experience with JJ. I visited the nursery early March and got the chance to meet up with John. He helped me pick out the plants I wanted. My plan was to bare root them and bring them back with me. John convinced me best way was to ship them in their pots so I entrusted that to him. He told me he was very busy so the plants would be shipped out in a couple of weeks. I got them delivered 2 weeks later and they're the exact ones I picked out.

If you're unsure about what you got, I'd check the trunk of the plants since they should have initials of the cultivar names written with a marker. Sometimes, these plants come with generic tags that say premium white or premium rainbow. So the best way to ID is by looking at what's written on the trunk.

In terms of communication, I'd say to call him because he likely won't have time to keep up with email inquiries.

    Hi Everyone,

I'll be sending out plumeria lists today and tomorrrow..FINALLY...to those who requested them by e-mail. This would be the rooted/rooting and cuttings. I have a bunch that are either potted or bagged for rooting and I'll try to indicate such on the appropriate lists. Many thanks for everyone who showed such patience in waiting!!! You might notice some changes at the top of the first page of each list...self-explanatory (I hope) for the delay. Anyone who I may have failed to keep updated on the progress (or lack thereof), my deepest apologies.

On another note, I've been trying to locate Dave Klemm. He contacted me through the forum but did not provide a contact. If anyone knows this guy, could you please pass on a request to contact me?

    Much appreciation everyone!!!

John is the nicest guy and very helpful when you go to the nursery. Id suggest that if you know someone near San Diego/Oceanside from the forum you may want to ask them to go to JJ's with several orders and pick the plants and have John ship them. John has a few workers and himself doing the bulk of the work in San Diego, some people think that JJ's operation is huge with many workers and staff, that is why there is an issue with communication.

When I want to buy JJ's plumies I make a special buying day trip up to San Diego which is a min 2hr 15min minimal drive without traffic and up to 3 1/2 hrs with traffic or an accident on the freeway to get there, that is why I also hit up some other nurseries like Tropic world and orchid nurseries. Depending on what I am buying I end up having to rent a huge SUV to bring back my haul as I do not want latex all over my interior.

So again you may want to find a GW memeber who is near JJ's to go with orders to pick out plants.

    Cheers

I agree that John's operation is a great, honest one for plants, he's just behind on orders a lot this time of year. If you accept beforehand that you'll have to work to get an order placed and shipped, you'll be a lot less frustrated.

Or you can place an order with Wendy at Double Peak or with plumygirl (above) and save yourself the trouble as they can get the JJ's varieties for you.

So sorry to hear that. I have met John many times and each time he spent hours helping me pick out plants. His patience is endless. But beyond that I appreciate his honesty. His plants are always healthy and happy.

As many have pointed out, this is a busy time for him, so if you are not patient like me then this delay can be really frustrating. I think his business is growing so much that at some point he will need to get more staff or just drop the retail side. There is only so much one can do in a day.

I totally get where you are coming though... when I buy I want my plants yesterday! :)

I believe there was an entire thread about the same thing last year. My experiences were the same as many of yours. I ended up cancelling my order due to frustration.

John does seem like a nice man and there is no doubt his plumeria are TOP NOTCH. I think if you are lucky enough to live driving distance from the nursery, that is definitely the way to go.

With such a thriving business he should hire a crackerjack assistant or two that are strictly in charge of the online orders, communicating and shipping. (I would love to work there :)

I think if this part of the business is fixed and running smoothly, JJ's would definitely be the #1 plumeria nursery.

By the way, is anyone else captivated by "Fuji Mist"??? Anyone have one? I usually only order a new Plumie if my heart rate speeds up from looking at the photo and this one did it for me.

Thankfully I ordered mine through Michelle (plumygirl) and although I (we) had to wait a few weeks for the order, she handled all the phone calls, ordering and verifying for me. She has kept me updated through the entire process and my plants are being shipped to me TODAY!!! HAPPY DANCE!!!

I'm getting CS3, Desert Sunrise and Temptation!!!

Thought I would add some happiness to this thread.

This is Jungle Jacks Thumbalina with 3 out of 4 tips having an inflo this year. Definitely a keeper.

WOW Mike! Thumbalina is a blooming machine!!!

So is my Divine - last year when I bought her she had 6 tips, several of those bloomed, giving me 11 tips, and I just looked the other day and I have 5 tips pushing inflos!!!

Dang you, Mike! How's Thumbalina's scent?

My Divine is leading the pack as well! Four out of the six tips have inflos already too.

Looks like CA Sunset is not far behind. And my J105 is pushing out the most gorgeous leaves. Can't wait to see flowers!

Hi everyone! I thought I should post an update about my own experience with Jungle Jacks. I sent John an email double checking that he received my order. He replied the next day telling me they were catching up on orders, which I can understand, and that he would get me an invoice by the next day. I actually got an invoice a couple of days later. I paid early in the morning via PayPal and he shipped it later that afternoon. So, if all goes as planned, my Divine will be delivered sometime tomorrow while I'm at work!

I'm sorry you had a bad experience.

I think perhaps with the incredible new website, he may be overloaded with orders. I have nothing bad to say about JJ's or John because my experiences have been wonderful.

I always email him, not on the form on the website, regular email. He usually answers promptly unless he is traveling. I ask about certain trees, how may tips, availability and suggestions. He is answers me within a day almost always.

The first time I ordered I was blown away by what I received. I was used to receiving smallish rooted cuttings, with decent roots. His were small trees with the roots filling the pots in the 5 Gallon sizes and even the 2 gallons had LOTS of roots, not just a few tiny white new roots. Now sometimes in the 1 gallon they will be fairly newly rooted but if you ask, he will tell you. I always have these shipped in pot so as to not disturb the new roots. They make the trip from CA to FL just fine. He packs his plants superbly.

I recently received an order and once again was very satisfied. They didn't have as many leaves this time because I ordered early. If you order in July or August they will all be better rooted and he leaves the leaves on. A few may fall off after they arrive, but many remained even though the trip was far and it was hot.

I also like that John is very patient, answers questions and always gives details as to how many tips, the shape of the tree, etc. The Safari I just got has about 10 tips. Such a pretty tree. T-Bred Tracy was a HUGE 3 tipper, big fat tips. Desert Sunrise he managed to dig around and find me a very nice 3 tip. Scentsation was only available in 2 gallon and it is on the smallish side but well rooted. He told me Tangerines Dreams were only in 1 gallons and fairly newly rooted. I could have waited and ordered that in another order, but we agreed to ship it in pot. It was fine, had a good amount of roots, new, but good. I now have it in Gritty and it is doing great.

I agree that he should probably hire someone to handle his internet and phone sales, but I would miss talking to him. He has never failed to pick out gorgeous trees for me and i trust him. He also is honest. One time I wanted one, forget which one it was, and he said it would probably look nothing like that in the hot sun of the FLorida Keys, it would fade, so I passed and it was more expensive than another he suggested which I got and adore,.... Sangria.
