In October of 2010 I bought my CA Sunset as a young plant with three tips from John. In May of 2012 I planted it directly into the ground and it's been very happy ever since. In fact so much so that I took off two big three tip cuttings this spring and it wasn't even fazed by that. Since we had a very mild winter, it never really lost last year's leaves and some of them are still visible in the background.
You just have to love this plant! I can't wait till the warmer temperatures will bring out the oranges and reds in the flowers (our temps have been in the low 70s). So good luck Roxanne. Wait for it to mature and you shall be rewarded.

Here is a close-up of the fullest flower head. Since I have new buds opening every day, I literally have to pick out the spent flowers to make room for the new ones. Oh what a chore... :-)

Interesting that the color is lighter than Penang Peach even in Texas. What a gorgeous inflo!

How is the scent? Is it like Penang? Growth habit looks even better.

I think the scent is similar, but it's always tricky to try and describe it. CA Sunset is described as a 'compact grower' and so far it's definitely that. The branches are quite hefty, though, and I'm sure I'll have to take more cuttings next spring. Almost every tip has an inflo on it this year and will split to three more branches for next year. I'll attach a photo from last fall that was taken after several days of Santa Ana heat. You can see how the developing buds responded with a lot more color.

This plant is barely 3 1/2 ft tall but 6 ft wide - I just measured it... The weight of the branches seems to help in keeping it low.
