Plant Plague!!!

Hello,

I'm new to this forum and new to gardening. I recently bought a house with a very large and mature garden with many different types of plants. Through most of the summer everything looked pretty healthy, which was a great relief as I was afraid I was going to quickly turn my new garden into a desert.

Unfortunately, I recently noticed a pretty large patch on the ground cover of dying brown leaves. I have no idea what this is, what type of plant is afflicted, nor what I should do about it. The dead patch covers a pretty large area and appears to be spreading quickly as it didn't exist prior to a week or two ago.

As you can see from the photo, this spot is in a shady area in my garden. Also, there has been plenty of rain over the last few weeks.

Please help! What should I do to contain the contagion!?!?

Looks like an azalea, perhaps. Anyone there use any weedkiller recently?

Hmmmmm. Sort of looks like compound leaves composed of 8 or so leaflets, along the lines of sweet woodruff. I'm not saying that it is woodruff but that's the look.

It does look like somebody dumped something in that spot, doesn't it? Junglewarrior, I think that it will be very helpful to determine the identity of this plant in order to figure out the problem.

Take some GOOD images of this plant, pick a section with healthy leaves. Then, there is a Name This Plant forum in which to post the pictures.....they'll be able to figure it out right away. Try to get a closeup of the plant, which would help ID the problem, too.

Yes, I thought of sweet woodruff also, but the longish stems of the dead stuff in front and larger leaf at about 10 o'clock had me thinking something larger. Looking at the healthy stuff under the hosta, it may indeed be sweet woodruff...or more than one casualty.

Closer pic of healthy stuff certainly would help.
