Aloha from Hilo, Hawaii

I've purchased an attractive pepper once again from the local garden store. This one is called "Hawaii Giant". Here is a list of descriptors for the plant:

1. Peduncle intermediate at anthesis
2. Only one flower stalk at junction
3. Plant habit erect
4. Calyx margin intermediate
5. Annular constriction at junction of calyx and peduncle absent
6. Neck at base of fruit absent
7. Fruit outline slightly to intermediate corrugated
8. Fruit shape sunken at apex
9. Fruit shape truncate at peduncle attachment

Fruit is pendent
Fruit is ~1 - 1 inches long and ~ 5/8 inch in diameter.

The fruit is red when ripe and seems moderately hot to me. I believe that it's an annuum variety of some sort but the plant nursery won't give me any information as to origin or whatever.

I'd like to know more about these little guys and would be grateful for whatever advice you folks could give.

Looks like a pepercini to me, but that doesn't mean anything. Until just this year I only know of the existence of maybe 10 pepper varieties. :)

I'm curious to see what this ends up being.

Yes it does have that look:

but that pepper is sweet and this one really has a little attitude to it...

Kind of looks like some sort of Paprika pepper. There are many different varieties, and yes, there is a little bit of spiciness with this one.

Here is a link that might be useful: Paprika

Before I read any one else's posts, I was going to say Pepperoncini. The only hesitation is that my experience with pepperoncini's is that they are typically a bit longer but the shape is perfect otherwise and they eventually will turn red from green. They are a relatively mild pepper. Here is a shot of my Pepperoncini's from two years ago showing some different color phases and shapes.

Oh, I forgot to mention that if I had to guess, I would say that your day job is conducting autopsies by the way your describe the pepper. Some kind of science background anyway.

Aloha all,

Yes I'm afraid that I geeked out a little on the description. I will admit to having a science background but enjoy other interests (www.ukuleles.com - my website).

I've been reading Jean Andrews' "Pepper" book and then got involved with the Lucid 3.3 software (a free software program for creating a biological key) so I decided WTH who knows who reads these posts and put in the descriptors.

In any case, thanks very much for the really helpful posts . I think the paprika link is very interesting and I'll search more in that direction. This is really a swell forum and once again, thanks to all involved.

It looks very similar to the Greek Pepperoni's that I grow each year as well as being moderately hot/spicy in heat.

Here's a pic from 'Semillas' where my original seed came from (http://www.semillas.de/shop_en/index.html)

The semillas.de website is staggering in the number of varieties that they have! Thanks for the link. I now think that my pepper may have Central American links. The Agronaldo de Asti looks very much like my pepper and the heat level is there as well.

Once again, thanks to all...(^-^)
