What To Do This Winter?

Ok. So, I've had my 8 plumeria trees for 10+ years now. Only one is getting big. About 6' high, but only has 6 big tips on it. I got REALLY tired of dragging the pots in and out. And worrying about them in wind storms, or even moving them during torential down falls. I considered sinking the pots underground. My husband felt if we sunk the pots, we might as well just plant them. So, reluctantly, I agreed.

We have mild winters here. He told me that while they typically winter in our garage, that the temperature is not much better than being outside, and the roots would be better protected in the ground, instead to being inside of plastic pots. I had to agree with him on that!

They were all root-bound when I removed them from the pots, so they needed more root space.

My question is, how am I going to protect the branches this winter if we get frost, or more importantly ice storms?

Any northern Flordia growers here with plumeria in the ground? Or any advise would be apreciated. I don't know why I am worrying about this now. I figure better to be prepared.

Thanks for any advice.
