Buds falling off

I have a sweet bell pepper plant that is not doing so well. It is producing buds but all of the buds so far have fallen off. Its not that tall (6 inches) and I don't know why my buds are falling off? My plant also has a black spot on the stem of it. I water regularly and it gets plenty of sunlight. Can anyone help?

need to know approximately where you live. how hot is it there. are you in florida or in canada. the north pole or the south pole. australia or new zealand. Madagascar or hawaii, the usa or russia. south africa or norway. it all depends on the weather.

this web site should make the zone state be permanent instead of having to fill it out every time.

There are many single factors or a combination of that contribute to this dilemma. Most relate to plant stress.
There are pepper varieties developed to have some stress-resistance.

Bud drop is controlled by the action of plant hormones. Auxin prevents drop where Ethylene causes the bud to fall off.
Normally, the buds produce auxin, which allows the buds to grow and develop. Under stress conditions, the plant generates ethylene, and the buds fall off within two days.

In your situation, some stress factors may be likely, some may be unlikely. I'll attempt to cover some potential causes which you may be able to identify with.

    Â Transplant shock
    Â Excessive Nitrogen
    Â Drought conditions
Â Over-exposure to high or cool winds
    Â Saturated soil
    Â Excessive soil temperature
    Â High daytime temps.
    Â High night temps.
    Â Disease
    Â Insect pest(s)
    Â Heavy shade

    Excess nitrogen is #1 cause

I live in northern Virginia. What can I do to fix excess nitrogen? Thanks for the help.

Excess nitrogen is generally caused from over-fertilizing. Too frequently or using fertilizer w/ a high nitrogen count (1st of the 3 numbers).
If you feel that you haven't fertilized that much, look into the other causes I mentioned.

It sounds like a young pepper? It may be best that buds are falling now so that energy can go into growth rather than fruit. I'm guessing it will reflower and set pods when conditions are right.

You can over water for a few days to flush the excess nitrogen
