the center frond where the growth sprouts from,I cant remember the name right now,but what is the best way to keep it dry without covering it every night.

The best way is to make sure it's in good draining ground.

The soil drains too well already.
Hey wineandlobos, the only way to keep the spear from freezing without covering it everyday is to build a small structure over it for the winter. You can build a small frame out of 1"x2's and cover with plastic. You can probably just cover the top, north and east and west to keep the spear dry and then on cold fronts add some Christmas lights and cover the front too. Don't cover it completely on warmer days though cause it will create a lot of heat without some fresh air. You might just put a larger trash can over them. Just try to keep them from freezing right after moisture. Cover the soil with lots of mulch.
I'd just lay the lights around the base of the palm and that will probably keep them warm enough. How are your Washies doing now? Is it a Trachy by the wall?

The washies are doing better and are actually putting out a couple of fronds slowly, but they are moving alot quicker than they were and they do look better now.It is a Trachy next to them and that one is doing well too,I plan to just burlap them,maybe tie them up and see how they take the winter,Im gonna leave a couple un-protected just to test them.I've had them burlapped for the past week although it has been nice, 2 of those nights were at near freezing, I just havent had time to unwrap them.thanks for all info yall.
