Looks like the chrysalis of an American Painted Butterfly, to me.

I'm so curious as to why a butterfly would get preference over a moth, lol. Some of the most beautiful insects in the world are moths, certainly among the most interesting....and many are huge!

I have some flowering plants in my garden to specifically attract those nocturnal moths.

Thanks for the ID, and great question that is actually easy to answer. The list of moths that are garden pests is rather long. But I don't mind moths if they're not pests. The ones I don't want around are:

• banana moth

• Australian leaf curl moth

• apple coddling moth

• Indian meal moth

There are a few more to list but these are the ones that exist around these parts.

The rest of the moths can go and have a heyday in my garden, I don't mind at all.

I protect my garden from butterflies.....sulphur, cabbage whites, black swallowtails, mostly. All are beautiful but their larvae are very destructive in my small but productive garden. I do have to patrol for hornworms on the tomatoes and peppers.

I grow milkweed and seedling citrus solely as host plants for the Monarch and Giant Swallowtail, which are utterly destroyed every year by the caterpillars.
