When was the last time you were waiting to see if you get hurricane strength straight line winds with 100% chance of hail and 80% chance of big hail, maybe three inches of rain and got an earthquake as a first course part of the deal? Felt it also, here in OKC. Gee, with so much excitement all the time, a body could never get bored here.

First report says it is a 4.7 so that's another big one. It may change after they evaluate.

Felt it here in the Village, OKC. much shorter and less shaky than Saturday's quake. My poor friend in Prague got another late-nite call from me, she's ok, nothing compared to Sat she says.

I was outside walking the dog. Heard it, but didn't feel it. Dh was in house and felt it.

CC, Some people just have all the luck.

Wanton Mara....you must be talking about the rain. Bring your tank up here.

Yeh, just a bit before 9 things started rockin'...again. I'm SO not amused.

So since I'm out so far from ANYONE...I'm thinking of just how much I'd need to do to move my garden...it's beginning to look like a favorable consideration. If I knew then what I know now.....

    I felt it too.

On the positive news side....I peeked at my rain gauge through the deluge outside, there's already more than 2 inches in the gauge, and it is pouring again.

I felt it too, but not nearly as strongly as the earlier 5.6. This one was more of a sudden jolt, as if something had hit the house, like a huge gust of wind or a truck or something. However, we weren't stormy like y'all were, and no trucks or other vehicles had hit our house either. There was not as much rattling of items as we had the other night.

Whereas the one on Saturday night was obviously a quake, I had to ask myself 'was that a quake or maybe a tornado descended from the partly-cloudy moonlit sky?' and I even looked ouside to see if it was stormy. It wasn't, although a few minutes later a brief shower would occur. I think if I had been asleep already, it probably wouldn't have awakenend me,

And, for all of you getting rain, enjoy it! Think about how scarce rainfall was earlier this year. I am still waiting for decent rain to fall here although we are having sporadic showers now that drop a few hundredths of an inch here and there. I think it adds up to a tenth of an inch or so at our house in the last 24 hours.

It does seem peculiar to have an earthquake during a period of widespread severe or potentially severe storms. What next?

My rain gauge said 5.5 inches this morning, which is NOWHERE close to what the mesonet said. I hope it really was 5.5 inches, we certainly needed it.

Dawn, last night's earthquake felt a lot like Friday night's, and not very much like Saturday night's to me.

    What a wild night!

    Lisa,

I didn't feel Friday night's quake, so I don't have that experience to compare last night's to, but last night's felt very different here from the 5.6.

To tell you the truth, even though we had no watches and no warnings in our county and it wasn't even stormy, because this felt more like a jolt than a shaking, my initial thought was either a tornado or derecho wind had just slammed into the house. I got up and looked outside and it was not stormy and the moon was shining clear and bright, which sort of blew the tornado or derecho wind theory right out of the water.

I even checked my weather radio upstairs and it hadn't gone off and I hollered downstairs to Tim to see if we had just been hit by a downburst or some other sudden wind storm. He came upstairs and acted like I was crazy, because he didn't even feel it. So, I decided maybe I was crazy but I knew I had felt something! When I got online this morning and saw the earthquake report and it had happened at the same time that I had thought something hit our house, well....then everything made sense. Or, at least as much sense as it ever makes around here.

As far as your rain gauge, I'd trust it. Our rain gauge almost never matches the mesonet station's or even our local cooperative weather observer's, and his house is just a little over a mile from ours, as the crow flies. In fact, during one rain storm, we got an inch more than our friends received onlhy 1/3 of a mile up the road from us. And, sometimes, even the two gauges on our property show a bit of a difference in what fell.

I didn't feel that quake last night. Our son called as soon as they felt it north of Bartlesville. I did hear a noise but we were in the midst of storms and I think what I heard was distant thunder. We have had almost 5 inches of rain this week and it is looking like we are nearing the end. I hope so, because that is enough to have at one time.

5 inches of rain overnight at my house in the Village. Wet and soggy today.

We got plenty of rain too for one time. Lots of road flooding here in OKC (none here at our house). We missed out on the 100% chance of hail. Aw shucks, what a disappointment. We didn't get any of that straight line hurricane strength wind either and no power outages. Just a real good deep soaking rain. There's another chance for rain next week.

We got about 0.75", so if we're going to catch up with a bunch of y'all, Mother Nature owes us a quick 3 or 4 or 5 more inches. I don't think we'll get it though.

Mia, that makes me feel better that you registered 5 inches too! I got my rain gauge at ACE and its demeanor seems more decorative than scientific, so I'm always worried it is not accurate! I actually bought it because it would measure more inches of rain than any others I could find. After the gully washers we have had in the last few years, I need a rain gauge that measures more than a couple of inches!!

Dawn, I hope you get some!

Soonergrandmom, you know, when people move to this state, someone should hand them a tip sheet pointing out that all the rain falls on YOUR side of the state!!

I go to bed early, and was awakened by the earthquake. This is so scarey. I am ready for them to stop. This one lasted longer than the other, just about a minute. That is far too long.

Apparently there was another weaker one this afternoon..3.6. I didn't feel it but several of my colleagues did. The 4.7 from yesterday didn't feel as much like a jolt here as it did for you, Dawn. I just felt like I was swaying side to side for a few seconds and then it stopped.

We got 1.68" from the storms overnight, and apparently a tornado might have touched down a few miles NE of us. They haven't done the damage surveys yet, but it took the roof off a house and snapped some trees and power poles. That same "circulation" on radar continued on to Norman and caused some damage on the north side of town in the same areas that got hit by that downburst a few months ago. Never a dull moment in Oklahoma, for sure!

Lisa, I have noticed that it seems like at your house the last few years, you are going without rain for longer periods, and then when you get it, you get 5 or 6 or 7" all at once. Think about how often your rain gauge goes from empty to simply overflowing, and how I am simply green with envy every single time. : )

It sure is true that Carol's end of the state is very blessed with moisture most of the time. There's a reason the Green Country up there is always so green. You notice that Carol and Al moved up there. They didn't move down here to moisture-challenged southern OK. Clearly they knew what they were doing.

Miraje, After having gone from never experiencing an earthquake to feeling 2 in one week, now I probably am going to overreact and think I am feeling a quake every time a large truck rumbles down the road or something.

A little north/northeast of Love County, a small portion of Carter County and Marshall County had some wind damage that likely resulted from strong straight-line winds. The rain storm was pretty dull here, and I don't mind that. Exciting weather generally equals damaging weather. I think a lot of the storm chasers out in SW OK chasing those tornadoes probably had a pretty exciting experience.

This year has been so eventful in terms of weather, climate and earthquakes that I am ready for a non-eventful, dull period to occur. In Oklahoma, I guess that's not likely.

I've been on Facebook too much and not on here where I should be :~P

But...I, too, received a LOT of rain from my point in The Village. My gauge registered 4.75" and that was when I got to finally look at it the next night (after a long day at work)...so maybe a tiny bit had evaporated by then.

I wondered about Mesonet, too....because they were telling me I shouldn't have gotten more than an inch or two...but I know how how hard and how long it rained at my house, that's for sure!

Earthquakes? I felt the "rattling" one on Saturday night and the "rolling" one on Monday night. I didn't like either one of them, to tell the truth...give me a good old tornado any day of the week!!

That's true Dawn, we've had some wild rains in the last few years. It helps fill up the lake, so that's a good thing! My doors are all closing normally again...yay!!!

When I first saw that concrete drainage ditch in The Village I thought it was overkill, but after I saw the streets look like rivers once, I knew why it was there.

Yeah, I know! You should have seen it after our huge floods a few years ago. They had to go back in and re-engineer parts of it. It could not hold the runoff that year.

Ok, so I feel much better about the reported rainfall. The Mesonet says I've only gotten 1.69 inches in the last 7 days. My rain gauge says 2.75 and that's after not checking it for a couple of days. I know that we really had heavy rain, wind & hail Monday nite after the last 4.7 quake. Poor Chandra is going to be putting up his backyard fence again and fixing his kids' playhouse. It all came tumbling down again. He's got a great outlook! He's thankful his garden was done and not full of new plants!

On the subject of quakes - I've been being a "geek" and reading everything I could find on them as they pertain to our region. My fear was the catastrophes that happen in Japan, Turkey, California, Alaska, etc. The re-assuring thing I've found on several sites is that they don't expect that to happen here as the earth's layers in this part don't have a "tectonic" layer. I understood it to be a big contributor to those areas that are prone to distructive quakes. I really believe that now because I read Turkey had another one today that registered 5.7 and it toppled an 6 story hotel. That country must have really poor building codes.

None the less, I still don't want to experience anything like that 5.6 we had Saturday nite. My house shook so bad I couldn't stand up to even GET to a table to crawl under. Since all this started (on the upside!) I've notice a huge decrease in gopher activity so I'm hoping all their tunnels collapsed!

    Paula,
My husband was talking to a geologist friend today, and he said the fault line near Prague/Meeker/Sparks that's causing our recent earthquakes is a shallow one and not the type to cause the massive damage like they've had in some places like Japan. Sounds like that fits in pretty well with what you've been reading.

Now if you're right about the gophers, well, that's one good thing that's resulted from the earthquakes :-).

Another good thing is the way its brought out the wonderful sense of humor that we have in this part of the world. I get tickled hearing some of the phrases like "Welcome to Oklahoma, home of the Quakenado" and "ThunderQuake 2011." LOL! Carrie Coppernoll's column in today's Oklahoman is really cute. I'll post the link below.

âÂÂ"I've got to tell you that in 30 years I have never had a 3 minute weathercast where I talk about: tornadoes, flooding, snow, a freeze, earthquakes, wind damage, and an asteroid nearing the earth. I promise to talk fast." - Dan Threlkeld, Tulsa News Channel 2

I have only been on earth a short time, compared to thousands or billions of years, and I have never seen so many different "issues". It make me wonder what is going on.

Carol, now that's funny! Dan Threlkeld is a name from the past ... he was on one of the OKC TV stations years ago.

Yes, I remember when he worked in OKC, then I found him again when I moved into the Tulsa viewing area. I didn't see the forecast, but my DIL posted it on her Facebook and I thought it was very funny.
