Do you know?

That the Tulsa Master Gardeners send out an email newsletter with timely tips for gardening?

Of course, I am subscribed to it, as I took the course there. I will stay subscribed to it (even so I now live in Edmond), as it is a GREAT resource.

Here is some of the info from the newsletter I just got:

Q&A

Ask a Master Gardener

What can I complement my Encore azaleas with for more late color?

There are new hybrid varieties of camellias that do well in our area. These camellias range in colors of white, pink red or purple and take our summer heat if planted on an eastern or northern exposure.

When can I prune my Knock-out roses that are still blooming now?

The best time to prune any of the shrub roses is mid to late February. Pruning now will promote new growth that will be subject to winter die back.

Should I trim ornamental grasses now?

Ornamental grasses and their seed heads can be enjoyed all winter and provide a haven for birds from cold winds. Cut back to 6 or 8 inches in late February or before green sprouts start to appear in the spring. (added by Moni: use duct tape to keep your grass in control while cutting it)

Why are my Loblolly pines dropping needles that have turned brown on the limbs near the trunk?

Needles near the trunk of pines turn brown and drop off as normal needle cast or needle drop. Needles at the end of branches will remain green and healthy.

Can I start roses from cuttings?

Five to eight inch hardwood cuttings should include 2 or 3 nodes and can be placed in the refrigerator wrapped in a moist paper towel for a few days. When ready to plant, dip the cutting in a rooting hormone and stick in a shady spot either in a pot or in the ground making sure the buds are facing upwards. Water and place a mason jar over the cutting to provide warmth and moisture.

Watering perennials under the eaves

Plants and shrubs under your eaves require special watering attention during the winter months, especially those under the eaves of the house which don't have the benefit of rainfall. This can be particularly true with Azaleas, Rhododendrons or any plant with very fine, hairlike root system. Make sure that you keep the soil damp during the winter season, by checking the moisture level weekly. Another suggestion: once we have had a deep freeze and the soil temperature has dropped enough that you won't be covering warm soil, water the plants thoroughly and apply several inches of mulch. This will help maintain the moisture and winter watering can then be less of a chore. Click here for more information.

It's Kale time

This is the time to add some color to your landscape by planting cabbages and kales. In kaleaddition to their unusual colors, they are very cold resistant. There are many varieties available and using them as container plants along the walkways and patios makes for great colors over the winter months. Click here for more information.

Forgot to fertilize your fescue lawn?

Normally, late November is the last time to fertilize your fescue lawn. But in case you forgot to do so, you still have a few days to put some nitrogen down (providing the ground hasn't frozen yet.). Do it in the next day or two. See below for a complete fescue lawn care calendar.
