Additions to Potager - Fall and Spring

Hi all -

Firstly, I am now MacGregor instead of Chickadeemelrose on the forum, I haven't been here in awhile and I reregistered.

I did add two boxwood shrubs to either side of the main entrance of my potager, where the long gravel path starts and goes the length of the potager. I got these in the ground in early November, just barely within our planting time! They provide nice winter interest, and they confirmed my feeling that I wanted the potager to be pretty formal in appearance, so that was helpful. (Also, autumn is a great time to purchase shrubs, 1/2 price everywhere.) It's amazing how thinking and plans about a potager change "as you go."

I will also add a dwarf apple tree acoss the gravel path from the tree that is there now - this gravel path crosses the long one at a right angle, dividing the garden into four quadrants. Our wrought iron bench will go between the trees, facing the garden, so that it will feel more like an enclosed side (no fence on that side).

Do you folks go out into your potagers in the winter? Other than cleanup, I have just enjoyed seeing birds there, and how the boxwoods look against the snow.

Hi Donna- I'm so glad you got the boxwoods. The apple trees and bench sound perfect, in your potager :)

Do you have any pictures?

I've also noticed that the garden seems to change over time. As I read something new, or see a different idea, I start to think how neat it would be to add that to the garden. This spring, I want to put in a short fence, mainly to make it easier to 'hide' some of my plants from the deer. If they're against a fence or building, I can screen the other side with herbs and companion plants, but exposed...the deer seem to find the plant and start munching!

Here's my fall and winter pictures of the kitchen garden/potager. Believe it or not, my husband enjoys sitting at the arbor, even more than I do...it's the view!

Your photos are beautiful! What a great idea, to document the garden through the seasons. The winter one in particular, with the perspective looking through the arbor in the foreground, is wonderful.

WoW!! Finally a different view of the garden! (OOPS, didn't quite mean that! A different season of the garden!)
Can't wait to see the spring/summer views!
I'd like to learn how to post pics, but I'm afraid to load a zillion pics onto the computer, only to have them be swallowed up!
