new cutting

Hi all,

Since two weeks i have 2 new cuttings. They are potted in (clay pots)1/3 caktussol and 2/3 perlite and dusted with rooting hormone.

One of my cuttings has a bit a soft stam (in the middle) The bottom part is quite solid, and the top part is solid to. Can this be rotting? Or is it just dried out or stressed.

The plants had 2 weeks of hot weather during the day, (full sunlight for the whole day) And the soil is dried out. In total i watered the plants 3 times now so i dont think i keep them to wet? At night i put them on a heatingmat inside, this because the nights can be pretty cool down here (The Netherlands) I dont know if the roots develloped allready because i dont know how to check...

Or can you see this when the leaves start to grow?? I cut all the big leaves off and left the claws behind.

Thanks in advance!

It is hard to tell from the photos what may be going on with your plumeria.

The most important thing is to NOT water the plants!!!!! They have no roots to take up the water and it will just sit there promoting rot. You can mist the tops, but avoid letting much trickle down into the soil. You have given them a good start. I know it is hard, but the best thing to do is leave them alone. Ignore them. Wait for full leaves to develop. That is your sign the roots have developed. If nothing happens for a few weeks, you can try to gently pull the cutting out of the pot. If it resists, leave it alone. If it pulls out easily, it has not rooted. Check for softness and/or black on the end of the cutting. If present, cut it back inch by inch with a sharp knife, sterilizing the knife with alcohol or peroxide in between cuts until you have clean, white wood. Then let it callous over for a week or so, and restart the rooting process, using rooting hormone with fungicide.

Watch the soft spot on the plant. If it spreads, you likely have stem rot. Let us know if that happens and we can give you more advice on how to proceed.

    Good Luck,
    Mike

I have six new cuttings too. I have grown plumeria from seeds before, but never tried cuttings until now. Only one of the six has new leaves, but another has bloomed and almost all have tiny little leaves showing. The five I have look just like your picture. I did everything just like you did, and guess I have to be patient and wait. It sounds like Mike has very good advice for both you and me.

Thanks for the advice Mike, I stoped watering now.
It seems like the stam is a bit more solid the last couple of days! And on both cuttings i can see some green tiny leaves are growing in the middle. So i think something is happening :-) The original "new" leaves that i left on the cuttings are not growning realy.
The weather over here is pretty hot (35 celcius) the last week so that helps to i wrekkon?

Another picture of my young Plummys collection.

Please let me know what you think of them.

    Thanks!

    Hey neles they look fine..
Some plumies are slow growers just leave them alone like mike said..
Give them as much sun as possible they will take as much as you can give..
Put the pots on a warm to hot surface this will speed up the rooting process..
The more leaves you see the more she is rooting..
Flowers do not indicate she is rooting only thru new leaves..
She will need to be repotted when you see the roots protruding thru the top of the soil..
However these are clay pots so don't let them sit in those pots too long after you see those roots because the roots will stick to the clay pot and you will break them when you repot..
When you do see some more leaves like 6 to 8 more then feed them with a good fertilizer that has micronutrients in it also..
I don't know what they sell over there but i don't use any of the Miracle Grow stuff for many reasons..
I use Peter's or other products first..
Holland is putting out alot of great stuff for the hydroponics peeps and it works great for me because it is more friendly to the plant and with less salt..
Also get yourself a bottle of spray and grow or some other good foilar spray and spray the leaves once a week..
    Treat them like people..
What is harmful to us is most likely harmful to them..
Just like us if we eat well and take our vitamins then we will have a strong immune system to fight off diseases so is true for the plumies..

The ferilizer i use now is 20-20-20 (for growing) or 10-51-10
For flowering. This stuff i bought at an Fuchsia grower.
with hydroponics you mean the Mariuhana growers? Yes we have plenty of growshops over here. But the fertilizer is all PK or just N So i decided to just use the Fuchsia stuff. Wich will do the trick to i think...
The foilar spray i dont know, can i use some of my normal fertilizer for that?

I have had great success with a product called SprayNGrow. It actually is three products. SprayNGrow, CocoWet, and Bill's Perfect fertilizer. These are mixed and sprayed on the foliage. All my plants love this and respond well to it. It is available from the company directly, and at several other online sources.

I have read about high phosphorus fertilizers hurting some of the beneficial microbes in the soil, so I stay away from those. I use a 20-20-20 early in the season for leafing out and growth, then switch to a 4-10-10 midseason for blooms, and to a 0-10-10 late so I don't get fragile growth before the dormant period. I also use Jack's and stay away from the Miracle Grow products, but I also know others who do well with them. Different microclimates require modification of care systems for best success.

    Thanks again Mike,
Where can i get this Sprayngrow? i asume its american fertilizer? So i think i am unable to get it over here?? due to strange export laws.
A couple of months ago i tried to get some "Pete's super bloom" From the US but no company was willing to send it to The Netherlands (Europe)

Funny, i kept my cuttings dry. Yesterday i was off for couple of hours and a thunderstorm hit my town. The cuttings are soaked again :-) The rest of my garden was happy though...

Hey neles i find it hard to believe what you said about the hydro guys maybe you should check with them again..
Most of the new products that everyone is using on their plumies came from the hydro guys including sprayNgrow..
The hydro guys don't have soil so they have to supply the plants with all the nutrients including the micros..
In fact their products are far more superior then the regular market items..
Any over use of chemicals in the hydro field and most of the time the plant dies in 4 hours..
We as soil guys can get away with chem abuse because the chemicals get wash out in the soil..
I am not a hydro guy but i use some of their products because they use the right nitrogen and other nutrients that the plant can use right away not the garbage you see in alot of brand items..
Most of the nutrients in today's stuff takes 3 weeks to breakdown before the plant can use it and the salt levels are way too high on most of them..
    Anyways to each his own..

Here is what alot of peeps are using over here..
I had to snip the url because it was very long for the forum..
As you can see from their site it was for the hydro folks..

I happen to find a NL site so give them a try..

I only went to a growshop in my town specialised in Mariuhana growing (legal over here)They only had fertilizer PK or N so i didnt look any futher.
I did send a mail to Biobizz.nl to ask for the spray-n-grow.
What sort of soil fertilizer do you order at Biobizz? Biobloom?
Is it legal for you to import this??

Funny i could find it so close to home..
    Thanks Iopaka!
