Palm Protection

Hi guys. Heres some pics of my VERY minimal protection for my trachys and sabal.

This is my largest trachy. Its just tied up with christmas lights wrapped around it with a hefty layer of mulch. I'm going to get some wire type temporary fence material and put around it and wrap that in plastic soon.

This is my smallish Sabal Birmingham. Mulched and covered with a pot. No lights, no heat. Thats all he gets for protection.

Here are 2 small trachys planted right next to each other. Heavily mulched and covered with a staked down trashcan so the wind doesn't blow it off. No christmas lights, no heat, just covered to keep it dry.

Here are my test subjects. A Sabal Brazoria and a very small trachy the Virginian gave me that he started from seed. Just heavily mulched and next to my concrete walkway. I'm not doing anything else for them.

Brazoria Looks perfect so far!

Thanks guys. I'm sure it will make it unprotected, but the question is how good it will look. I'm hoping it surprises me. It's in a nice little spot. South facing and right next to the walkway. We'll see.

Love the Big Lots $5 pot.The Brazoria looks great. Can take a beating.Cover if it snows. One other observation-it is kind of a grower, however it will grow bigger and I think you have it planted to close to walkway and bush.

Josh, how do you wrap the trachy's fronds as shown in the top two photographs? Are those fronds that tough, and yet that flexible? I have a trachy outside that is now approaching 6'. I've thought about wrapping them up like you do, but I'm afraid that they'd snap if I tried that. How do you hold the fronds together so they don't flop all over while you're intially trying to tie them together?

Right now I have my palms in styrofoam boxes (very similar to what arctictropical has described he does in numerous postings). So far this fall - it aint winter yet! - we've (Minnesota) seen temps down to five degrees above zero (F), but inside those boxes with only one or two bulbs the temps have never gone below 35, and are usually between 40 and 60.

    Thanks Topher!

dln949 - Not that I'm a tree hugger lol, but I gave the tree a big hug and pulled upwards at the same time. The fronds just kind of folded in and went into that shape. My wife then held them together while I tied them with the string. Thats it. I made a small wire enclosure wrapped in plastic for it last night. I'll post pics later.

    Hi Jay

If you liked giving the trachy a big hug, try doing it with a yucca torreyi!! OUCH... I finally got the system down, though, I work a bungee up the trunk and slowly pull them in. No matter what, there's no painless way, and I look like a user by time I'm finished.

I hope I can keep my brazoria alive this winter, as they are a very beautiful palm. Mine just kind of sat there all summer - didn't gain, didn't lose - so I hope it had time to at least hang on for a winter.

I agree brazoria is a cool palm, mine is very small but held its own as it was planted late July,it has seen rain and 18F and 12F with absolutly no damage,I have a feeling it will take off next year, esp if undamaged this winter!
