My only problem with that would be that I need to cover my squash/melons with floating row covers to keep away the squash bugs and striped cuke beetles. Row covers may not look very attractive in the perennial garden.

yeah, I've even been known to grow melons in pots. Big ones, of course.

I recently ( this year- so it is untested...) started running out of room.. soooo I am now putting things like jalepenos and herbs OUTSIDE the gated veggie/potager garden.. ( aroudn here all veggies must be fenced.. deer, groundhogs,bears... you name it) I have perrenials on the outside and now I am putting hot peppers and herbs that the deer and such wont eat on the outside.. this saves me space on the inside for MORE of the stuff that must be protected.

so i say- if nothign will eat it- try it on the outside in the perrenial beds :)
