Pepper Leaves Fall Off

Is it normal for bottom leaves to yellow and fall off fruiting pepper plants? Just as my plant has begun to set fruit, it has lost ~4 small leaves and ~2 large leaves in the span of a week, one by one, bottom up. No spotting, and the top of the plant looks very healthy, with a few more pale leaves near the bottom.

Other info: I've been squashing any aphids on a daily basis, and though they have been present, they don't seem to focus on the bottom leaves. My plant is in a 10 inch deep container. I have not used fertilizer or pesticides. The soil is the same "seed-starting" formula" in which i started the seedling. Thoughts / advice much appreciated.
