i mow a border in for most areas. i do have a wood chip mulch strip for a border in some other areas.

I have found that using Roundup (about a foot wide dead strip) gives a nice looking definition between lawn and the priarie and makes it easy to mow around it.. It does not, however, provide a safe fire break distance between trees and prairie. It also keeps the lawn from spreading into the planting. (Mostly)
