To answer your question, yes, you can cut your tree and root the top portion. This may prevent it from blooming, but as long as you allow the cut end to heal over for a few weeks, and then plant it, it should root. I also recommend dipping the cutting into root hormone. I also should have mentioned that you want the remaining tree to have an angle so water won't settle on it. It is also recommended that you seal the wound. I have never done this, but I am sure others here can tell you what they use.
