Sounds like an interesting experiment. I remember watching a Victory Garden episode on this subject, solarizing will kill off diseases lurking in the soil too. You can also keep cutting the sprouts and then paint the stumps with Round Up concentrate. DonÂt dilute it. Works great on the evil Buckthorn up here. Check out this link on solarizing.

my guess is that it would take years, not months

quick story...
i was at my neighbors house that had most likely the very same plant that was cloning from three houses down, springing up every now and again into a large growth. this took place over 50 years but imagine the amount of underground 'stuff' that a plant like that has. this plant was starting to actually move to MY garden but wasnt expecting the likes of me. i convinced all the neighbors that this was infact the same plant and that it running amuck. it went into the 2nd year of cutting stems and painting roundup on the exposed stem before if finally met its maker.

not sure a bit of hot plastic is gonna do it but sure seems fun to make em sweat a bit.
